I never miss it - it's Brisbane's best daytime party!
Although I did miss it last year because Kelly Clarkson/Mandy Moore/Sean Kingston had their concert in Brissy the exact same night :(
It was a case of panic.
Which gay event was I to attend!!?

It is always WAAAAYYYY to crowded and i love a crowd but there is never enough room to walk.. it s a terribly designed space but they are restricted as it is a street. Great fun though

I am actually a little demophobic... but have found it really depends on the crowd. Left the last two mardi gra parades early because I felt like I was trapped. But down the front at Hear and Now festival I was fine, because I knew that there was space behind the crowd of writhing sweaty hot men. So is there any clear space at all? Or at the very least easy access to Red Bull and Vodka? This combination may have also played a factor at the festival :)

Yes good access to red bull and vodka. They have a very handy outdoor bar which is always easy to get a drink at.

Just saw the line-up for Brisbane's Big Gay Day -
Operator Please
TV Rock and Zoe Badwi
Rhys
Kylie Show
Mega Drag
and main act is
Crystal Waters.
A very diverse range of acts with something for everyone. Not sure who the DJs are but have been told there is one from Sydney and one from Melbourne joining up with the best of Brisbane's gay and lesbian DJs. Should be a lot of fun.

Gold Coast Gay Day? Wow! Who is in charge of running that one and when did it start?
gaynproud
19th February 2009, 03:54 PM
Its actually called Little Gay Day and has the possibility of being something quite good but the organizers don't really understand how to do a big event to cater to a wide demographic in the GLBTQ community which is a shame. They insist on having it on the fringe of the Gold Coast and not centrally on the Gold Coast around Surfers Paradise where I have been led to believe the council would be happy to put something on subsequently it is hard to get to using public transport where they do intend on holding it. It does get quite cold once the sun goes down at that time of year in that area. The concept of it is great but it needs a committee running it that is not as biased as the ones that are running it. I give them points for doing something down there but they need to open their minds a bit with it and not be so tunnel visioned on how it is run and where it is held.

great points there. I think it was out at mudgeeraba which is the OTHER side of the freeway. How great wuld it be at parklands on down on the foreshore of broadbeach or southport park near the water..

I really loved it when it was held in Surfers about 5 years ago. It was at the old Concorde hotel. I think it is a Vibe hotel now. Was so much fun staying at the hotel and partying away by the river.
gaynproud
27th February 2009, 12:21 PM
They were fun when they had them in Surfers paradise. It was still a Vibe Hotel when they had the last one but the reason they are not held there anymore I think is due to the fact that the liscenced venue that is on the premises is now run by the new Gold Coast rugby league club and subsequently they aren't too keen to turn the area over to the GLBTQ community to run the event. It was a great location and very central and an easy walk to the after party. Hopefully one day the event will return to the Surfers paradise area as it is the ideal location for it to be held.

In reply gaynproud, but first a question..............did you attend the event in 2007 at Mudgeeraba ?
Gold Coast Gay Day (as the event is named), returned in 2007 after an absence of 2 yrs, with new organisers, a new venue and a new direction into the future. It was transformed into an All Ages FAIR DAY styled festival providing the LGBT communities, their family & friends an opportunity to come together & celebrate.
Mudgeeraba was chosen as the facilities were best suited to this kind of event. Over 1000 people turned out to celebrate & support.
The committee this year (of which there are 3 new members) plus several sub-committee members, did consider returning the event to Surfers, but the venue suggested, was not a viable option, based on discussions with police & community leaders, and Mudgeeraba presented as the best option, and judging on feedback from the community, a good choice has been made.
We have a strong, united, POSITIVE, committee, dedicated to the success of this event, also the support offered by volunteers, has been overwhelming.
We have firm support from sectors of the media who are looking ahead to the future of the Gold Coast Gay Day & can envisage the opportunities for growth that we see.
Perhaps the "bias" you see is generated by our combined, genuine passion to present the VERY BEST EVENT we can for the LGBT communities of the Gold Coast., despite our inexperience.
We welcome constructive criticism & are always open to suggestions from any member of the community, in ways to improve the event.
Its impossible to please everyone, human nature being what it is, but we are getting together and trying our very best ! We are having a go !

It's nice to see that, after years of ambiguity, the BGD crew are finally advertising what percentage of the funds raise go to charity. Of course, given the pitiful amount of the overall that gets donated from this 'charity event', it's advertised in fine print. You can almost understand them avoiding the questions all these years....

Big Gay day was the best one yet. Very well run and organized with every act fab. TV Rock and Zoe Badwi rocked the street like I have never seen it before and Crystal Waters was brilliant. I was one of the lucky ones to be dragged out of the audience to go up on stage and dance with her and her two very very hot American dancers. I was in heaven. The only problem I could see was the heat in the main room at the Wickham but I realized that the air conditioning was escaping out the open doors which had to be left open to accommodate the 6,000 odd crowd. It was a superb sunny day all day and a nice cool evening with not a rain cloud in sight. All up a great day and then a great after party at Fluffy. My legs and my head are way to sore now.

Heya:
Yes - this was the best. Everything went so well. Not a flat spot in the entertainment, no lagging, no really bad acts (Melissa Tkautz, are you hearing this?)
One of the best decisions was to have competant hosts to link things- Meshel and Adam were brilliant and worked superbly with Trixie and Synny.
Op Pls - top act, top choice. BGD has done well in getting great alternative, queer friendly Aussie acts - Diana Anaid, Sneaky Sound System, Kate Miller-Heidke, and now the young'uns from Elanora.
Loved Mega Drag - thanks for using Johna's "Pride" - a total favourite of mine - it's an anthem we need to hear more of in our community. And the Ultimate Kylie show proves you CAN do impersonations and not be lame (Bjorn Again....listening?)
Finally - Crystal Waters. Crisp, professional, perfect.
And the DJs on the main stage....all great, one or two less great moments (for me) with some of the work, but it was a great blend and happy times. Sorry, can't comment about inside the Wick as I spent all my time outside.
Thanks for allowing my rave!
