View Full Version : Losing my religion....

...well not exactly, but the news that Manacle is closing will feel like that to some. Manacle was always a place where I felt totally safe, so many great checkered memories. Together with the Imperial closing for up to 6 months for renovations, am I to believe that this leaves us in Sydney, with a population of 4.3 million people, with just THREE "official" gay venues?? I am counting the Shift, Phoenix and Stonewall. I do not include Arq or the Oxford or Columbian as gay venues. Even Perth and Adelaide have 2 gay venues each!
I'm not against mixed venues at all, but I still love going to a venue knowing that I'll be amongst my people. My question is, are gay venues not sustainable with today's clubbing culture?

it's pretty telling of the state of play at the moment. lets hope the new venue is a better one - am sure manacle wouldn't be moving unless they thought they could resurrect themselves somewhere better. i think they also know how integral they are to the community, especially at the moment!
i think sydney could definitely sustain gay venues - i just think that the laws in this state make it too hard for people to get spaces off the ground... and nothing stays very gay for very long either...

I reckon those girls from the UK who were looking for a venue for a 3 storey girl bar should fully buy that building - not only the manacle part but the T2 part as well...
If they gutted it and then did it up it could be an awesome venue and all for the girls..... plus i'm sure a couple of Bull Dykes could take on any trouble at taylor's square....

how nice to think that oxford street could be gay again - alas...

no more manacle... that's such bad news.
but are gay clubs sustainable? they are! but i think people have gotten to the point where it all just feels too hard.
