That's my fave Almodovar, but it would probably come in at number six for it's negative representation of queers in the media

I bought that Aussie surfing movie Newcastle on DVD last Friday night at JB Hi-Fi in the city for $12.99 (bargain). I thought it was a pretty good Aussie flick back when I saw it on a limited release at the cinemas. It does have a gay character (well two acutally) in this movie and shows off some mild gay scenes along with some very nice bronze male bodies  .

What do the I and Q stand for on the end of GLBT? :) Sorry for being dumb

I have only ever seen Brokeback Mountain and Lost and Delirious. Lost and Delirious made me cry.

It's not a dumb question at all PixieGirl. It's best to ask or seek if you don't know something. The I and Q stand for Intersex and Queer.

Some that I have enjoyed are:

When Night Is Falling
Nina's Heavenly Delights
Fire
Brokeback Mountain
Beautiful Thing

Is there anyone else out there that didn't like Brokeback Mountain? Applaud the fact that it brought gay themes further into mainstream... but I just didn't like the movie!

Thank you :) Then I have another question. :D Isn't Queer just another word for gay? Or am I totally wrong there?

Queer is a cover all word for those that don't specifically identify as G L B T or I... The acronym in its attempts to be all encompassing, also means it is exclusive when one section of the community is left out.

I think Queer could replace the acronym, but to I suppose some people it could still seen as a derogatory word and as too homogenising for our diverse community.

Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together is definitely on the top of my list. Great actors (Tony Leung and the late Leslie Cheung who was rumored to be gay and committed suicide in 2003). It was a realistic potrayal of a troubled gay relationship, great location..(hope i'll be able to visit Buenos Aires and the magnificent Iguazu water falls someday). the camera work is stunning. and my favorite artist Caetano Veloso's haunting version of La Paloma is simply divine. I highly recommend this one. I think you could get a DVD copy from Ebay but make sure you get the right area code for Australia. i am going to get my own copy again for the third time and hope that it wont get lost again.

I recently bought a new DVD movie titled 'Boys Don't Cry' which was released back in 1999, it's a bloody top movie and may also interest a few of our female members. Hilary Swank plays a terrific part in this movie and this was certainly proven by her Golden Globe - Best Actress and an Academy Award Best Actress awards :)

Yeah mybraveheart, HAPPY TOGETHER is brilliant isn't it.

I'd have to add

Shortbus
Hedwig & The Angry Inch
Another Gay Movie

And probably Rocky Horror Picture Show too... does that qualify as a'gay movie'? Can I dwell in the grey areas?

it is brilliant indeed mudley. just got my latest copy of "happy together". lost two copies already. don't remember who among my friends borrowed it. it is one of my favorite films ever with that other wong kar wai masterpiece "in the mood for love". but in the mood is not a gay film or does not have a gay character. i wouldn't even consider happy together simply a gay film. i doubt if the director meant it to be one. the talented christopher doyle, the cinematographer by the way is an aussie. his brilliant camera work alone is reason enough to watch happy together and his other works, kar wai's visually stunning in the mood for love, 2046 and chen kaige's temptress moon. another one on my list is the enthralling epic "farewell my concubine" also with the late leslie cheung and "angels in america" about the AIDS crisis in the mid eighties with amazing performances by merryl streep and emma thompson.

Oh yeah, ANGELS IN AMERICA is brilliant.... didn't think of that one!

It's interesting to think of what is a glbt film.... and I like your idea about what is intended by the film-maker. Certainly something like Another Gay Movie is in that category but many of the rest mentioned here are more nebulous than that - which is always more fun I think!

If any of you keen GLBTIQ movie goers around Brisbane (and even SE Qld) are seeking out some good GLBTIQ to either buy or even rent do visit http://www.bentdvd.com.au at New Farm. I popped in again for a visit earlier this afternoon and what an excellent collection of GLBTIQ movies they have on offer. The lovely girls, Mel and Age, are always so helpful and will endeavour to source a copy of pretty much any GLBTIQ you want and in some cases they'll have it in-store within a week. Being only my second visit there I ended up joining as a member today so I can also rent some of their extensive in-store DVD collection . Hey, I better go pour myself a glass of chardonnay and watch the movie I rented titled 'A Love to Hide' (http://gayinterestfilms.blogspot.com/2009/06/love-to-hide-un-amour-taire-2005-france.html):D
