Question Students told cross-dressing is as offensive as blacking up
What do we think of this?

Students at a leading university have been told not to dress in drag in case it offends transgender people, reports the UK's Telegraph.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education...acking-up.html

"There are several trans-identified students at Exeter and more who express their identity as gender-queer. To parody this appearance is crass and offensive on the same level as ethnicity."

Hmmmmm...

I just want to scream sometimes but I'm sure you are way past that by now.
Thank you, I've had several comments about it.

About bloody time insitutions stood up to misogyny and transphobia (basically what 99% of drag is) and shows the university is truly dedicated to diversity.

'Cross dressing' is not transphobic.

Drag Queens are not inherently transphobic or misogynistic (although they can be)

What happens if part of your gender expression involves what others would consider cross dressing?

I wore a three piece suit to a formal dinner/dance the other day...was that transphobic?
I certainly wasn't mocking anyone.

Trina what the earth are you talking about? You're not cross dressing at all and also you're not cross dressing for malicious intent, as these cis male (I assume) university students more than likely are. It's socially acceptable in modern times for a cis or non-cis woman to wear a three piece suit. Actually it's acceptable for cis and non-cis women to wear mens clothes in everyday life, yet it's not that acceptable for men to wear womens.

In fact what the university is doing is taking a step forward to stop ridicule and disdain being associated with people wearing clothes which are part of their gender self expression. Clothing is a very powerful non-verbal signal.

Yeah well that's a messed up double standard and what I actually meant.

It's traditionally male attire and yet there is no issue with a woman wearing it.

But should one man wear a dress...suddenly there's an issue.

Having said that if its a university tradition then it is almost certainly transphobic and/or mysoginistic, like most university traditions!

But I don't like sweeping statements that crossdressing in itself is wrong.

that's ridiculous.

But a message sent by the university's Student Guild ahead of a week of events to celebrate diversity on campus warned the practice could be deemed insulting to ‘gender-queer’ students.

fuck off, anything can be deemed offensive or insulting to anyone.

It was Stephen Fry commenting on the abundance of PC overreactions.

I don't think this is a particularly good thing to deem offensive as cross dressing is a legitimate form of gender expression - I have a friend who identifies as a 'cross dresser' because he doesn't feel that bigendered, nor transgendered, nor any of the other labels fit his form of gender expression.

I also think that regardless of the intent to NOT be offensive to trans* people, deeming crossdressing as offensive will lead to more shit for trans* people...

I love Stephen Fry. And his comments were mostly aimed at religious folk.

I agree with Trina in that it is a double standard that can't really be explained. Surely people should be free to wear whatever they damn well want, regardless of gender norms and how they personally identify. If a cis-male wants to wear a dress he should be allowed to. It is really only if a man wears a dress with malicious intent, to mock or ridicule genuine trans people that it is not OK. But how do you police that? There unfortunately isn't a law against being a fucktard, but at least the university is trying to help.
