Default Stranger in a strange land
Hi Melbourne! I've arrived... but that seems to be about it. I must say that I always pictured making the move here to my favorite city as somewhat different. Don't get me wrong- I still love this place just as much as the next queer but there was one thing I kinda forgot to factor in, and that's the fact that I don't know anyone!

My question for you Melbournians is simply: any suggestions? Maybe someone will know of a good place to start getting out there and amongst it. Places to go, things to do etc... anything is better than nothing ;-)

Hopefully will get to know some of you SameSamers too- I must say though, the Melb forum is a little slower pace than Sydney's! (yes, i'm trying to coax you into conversation).

Cheers & Happy St Patricks Day

joining a gym or sport group could be a good way to meet people to form the foundation for friend groups

take a foreign language class - they're very social by their nature

Thanks, some good tips there. I've been meaning to join a gym for awhile, I guess I just need the motivation!

No guarantees that everyone you meet there will be relationship or hookup material, but it never hurts to add to the circle of casual social contacts - friendly faces whom you recognize and can have a daily chat with

HI mate. Moving to Melbourne from Europe in October. The only crazy thing is that i will not know anybody but i thing using the internet and finding a few small cafe and bars to start hanging out will give you a kick start. Maybe when i arrive we can start a club. "New comers to Melbourne"

Hope you guys have settled in ok - have either of you explored any of the options on MeetUp?

On another thought - A lot of the people that I know agree that Uni is probably the best place to meet new people - something about the class structure that really fosters friend-making.

Many people have noticed that hanging out in bars and cafes or expecting work-mates to become personal friends just doesn't produce the same kind of results.
