Ive been asked a few times recently as a member of bentart what is gay art? Is it created by a gay artist or depicts GLBT iconography created by well anyone straight or GLBT. Is it just visually joyful? Ive struggled with the answer and when I ask the question get various responses too.

There's no straight answer, (no pun intended) however an event like bentart showcases not just the diversity of gay art and the burgeoning gay art community, but does give us an answer as to how gay art exists right now in this moment in time. I'll be there.

While I love the idea of mingling with other gays, I also have a bit of a problem with gay specific events.
Could you imagine if the Archibald was limited to heterosexual artists?

I have some of my work stashed away at home but it doesn't really come out for display to be honest.

Pablo Picasso did many pictures of obscure women all together naked, now today would someone depict it as a lesbian gathering? Maybe if a women did it.

But the sketch of the 1956 PICASSO Three Nude Men Standing drawn in a Ancient Greek/Roman manner doesn't seem gay.
Or the Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair, 1940, or the picture where she is laying naked with a self portrait. Now before you tell me I'm only commenting on naked paintings. Its the fact of the world that people rely on "sex sells".
As an artist, to be seen needs to usually be shocking or surprising. Your art work doesn't need to be mainstream. Has anyone wondered if the Mona Lisa is a man dressed up that way? Because I know that there are very female faces out there attached to a very masculine bodies.

Why is the thread about "queer" artists and then the body of posts about glbt artists? Are the terms now interchangable? Perhaps there aren't any queer artists around because no one knows what queer Actually means?

Entry is open to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersexed people 18 and over living in Australia. It isn't limited to just gay people.

I had it displayed at a student art expo at Swinburne in 2009. One of the pieces they were suggesting to put a curtain around it because of the apparently graphic content...I took issue to it and they let the matter drop and all three pieces were displayed next to eachother. Aside from that if it isn't street stencils then I haven't displayed anything for a long time.

I think because of having strategically cut out small pics of guys in compromising poses/activities but it wasn't a full on thing...unless of course you're some sort of puritan...lol
