i'm planning a 6--day stay in melbourne, possibly from Aug. 1 to 6.

are there any events/festivals around that time that I could enjoy?

I always enjoy going to see a movie at the Astor - this magnificent old retro movie theatre that plays arthouse flicks

Yeah, August is a bit of a dead-time asides from the Footy

If your into museum-y things, I'm sure theres some kind of special exhibition on, but that tends not to be my cup of tea so don't have any specifics for you in that regard.

Winter has a number of trade shows at the convention centre, but those probably wouldn't appeal to most visitors.

Hrmm, Most of Melbourne's 'Events' run October thru end of March - Winter is deffo a down period.

overall, Melbs is a ver "non-point" visitor experience - particularly in winter - without the big events or even particular 'sites' to see; but rather to hang out, have a wander, and soak in the atmosphere.

*If you like d/h, c/c skiing and/or snowboarding there is always Falls Creek or Mount Buller.
*If you like snow hiking in white outs there is always Mount Bogong.
*If you enjoy good wine, there is always the Yarra Valley/Healsville circuit.
*For galleries, tranquility, endless day spas, short hikes, and antique stores there is always Daylesford.

Hope this helps.
Best.

CBKs excursions are all quite popular with Melbournites. All of them are a distance from the city would likely require you to get a hire-car [not the way to be if you're doing the winery circuit solo!]

If you're going to be concentrating on the city-propre, then having a wander and an explore without a particular destination in mind is probably the best way to get a feel for Melbourne.

Maybe choose a different area of the city for a each day you're here. Maybe CBD/laneways on one day; Inner-north [Lygon-Brunswick-Smith Streets] on another; half a day each for St Kilda and Chapel Street surrounds; then maybe save an evening for a particular event - AFL or Arts Centre performance perhaps - and have dinner on South Bank and an explore of the Casino precinct.

Melbourne's Gay venues are scattered throughout the city, so theres not one particular place where you will find a concentration of them together, but - on the other hand - any neighbourhood you visit is likely to have a place or two.

Some of the 'Classics' - there are plenty others that other members might be able to suggest

Club Venues

Peel Hotel - Collingwood
Greyhound Hotel [aka The GH] - St Kilda

Pub Venues
Laird - Collingwood/Abbotsford
Dts - Richmond
Sircuit - Collingwood/Fitzroy

SOPVs

Wet on Wellington - Collingwood
Subway - CBD -under main Flinders Street Rail Station
Sircuit

Not Quite Gay, but pretty much so
Red Bennies - South Yarra
Railway Hotel - Windsor

Not sure what you're into, wysi...

I notice at the top of this page there is a "Whats On" index by city. That will be useful for you when you're here.
Keep your eye on the local rags.
Head to one of the gay pubs on Wednesday night when you get here and meet some locals. Ask them to entertain you over the weekend or at least point you in the right direction, I'm sure you'll have some fun.
Also, for touristy stuff...

Unfortunately not a good time for Melbourne in terms of weather or events. What type are you into? An array of live or electronic music can be found around town, with hotspots in Melbourne itself, or St. Kilda... about 10-15mins away by tram. As others have suggested there's footy (not a fan), art, such as Napoleon, Museum, movies and such...
