Hang around any university.... Most kids that go to uni for more than a year think this.... They have all this text book 'knowledge' but can't for the life of them live in the real world and deal with grown-up problems...

They are usually apparent by the over-use of large words and small points....

hahahaha so agree

I know a couple and there is that aloofness and everytime they open their mouth you need a dictionary to understand half the stuff they say and usually a GPS to follow the conversation as it runs in many directions.

but in the real world quite a few seem to wonder around dazed if its outside their comfort zone.

The level of anti-intellectualism in this country is the thing that's embarrassing.

What on earth is wrong with a bit of critical thought now and again? or would we all prefer Tracey Grimshaw do the hard work for us?

BTW, the notion of there being a 'real world' that exists paralell to fantasy unicorn land is ludicrous.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the sipping of lattes yet. Such idiocy.

Haha it's not anti-intellectualism, not from me anyway. Believe me, I'm an intellectual, I really do revel the opportunity to converse with others also.
However, the difference is when a young uni student comes along (out of a year in university) their eyes are just opening up to the adult world, learning new things etc. They start sputtering out fragments of lectures and tutes that leave everyone confused and scratching their heads....

There is a real (adult) world. I don't know what you're talking about with this 'notion' business? In reference to kids growing up and moving into the real world, it is very much a real thing...

I'm surprised about your opening statement.... TBH it doesn't phase me in the slightest, if I encounter it, I quickly shut it (or them) down. Surely you have the sense to not let small things like that bother you?

I can in some ways agree with what you're saying re: the cliche undergraduate. But as hard as they can be to tolerate, maybe you should give them a break. Everybody needs to find their feet at some point. I believe the saying goes "If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”

While we're on the topic of political discourse, if the anti-intellectualism that's crept in to our media in recent times doesn't bother you, well, imho it should.

And I'm sorry Doolander, but I just can't agree with your spiel on the 'real world'. It's a put-down and you know it.

We could make this thread more meaningful if we actually named the 'scathing intellectual GLBTs' that we're talking about.

I think you're under the misapprehension that this actually changes with age or time out of university.

As far as I can tell instead people just get better at concealing other people's thoughts as their own.

Yeah bitches, you wanna take this outside? Don't be dissin my education!

Seriously though I can out-real-life anyone on these forums. The shit I've seen go down and managed to survive... I still think understanding is the only sensible option for dealing with it, and sometimes that means critically deconstructing the world in your head.

How do you like them apples?

Edit: In case it wasn't clear, this was a joke

But, Your Honour, he started it!!!

Nah, I'm not easily offended. Sometimes I forget that other people can be.

This real world stuff has me beat... I'm off to mash Little Big Planet for a bit.

Yes please Fahed, I'd love you to be a scathing intellectual on me. I'm ready to be scathed any way you'd like.

I think I'd enjoy it. I have been wasting time and allowing the intellectual fat to grow upon me. I need someone to scathe it from me.

In my experience working with Uni grads in the bank is that they tend to be stuck in school mode text book black and white. When pretty much everything they will encounter is in a grey area. Usually compensating by using big words to talk about something they have learnt in a lecture hall and have little knowledge of how it operates in "the real world".

i find th same in th child protection system to

we'v got 21yo straight out of uni with a social work degree whose motivation for doing that course was "i want to help" (translate: "i want to teach u how to live like me and my mummy and daddy and then ul be ok"). they still live at home and are financially (and in some cases more) dependent on mum and dad, and they think they know how to make th best decisions on families and kids, based purely on some theory they can regurgitate but have no idea what its like in th real world - specially when they have come from affluent backgrounds and are now working with ppl who for th most part are less well off

it sux and its no wonder some ppl dont trust child protection/family support agencies when we'v got little fucktard princesses running around

Showing the world that you're intellectually (and/or financially) very fortunate every time you got a chance is crass.

Also know a 'little fucktard princess' like that providing emergency help to families in distress.
One word: disaster. No, actually three words: disaster, irresponsible and dangerous

Mainly started this as an afterthought to reading and watching Quentin Crisp. He seemed to be so contradictory and sometimes inflammatory for his views. And lived to 90.

Do you think I'm a uni student Doolander? I've never been to university. Wahoo for me.

also this all seems to have degenerated into a slagfest on uni-educated young ppl trying to be someone else than you are. And that's terrible.

But yeah I fucken hate them too. Don't really meet much in my industry, can't handle reality and the grind. No one cares about your posturing and ideas, JUST DO THE WORK.

I agree with Wysi. I doubt that you guys were any better when you first started working. The fact that these people have a good theoretical construct of the world to play with is an advantage for them - not a burden on you. Everyone has to start somewhere, and they will likely make the same mistakes they would have made had they never gotten an education - I.e. because they're new, not because they're educated.

Maybe the reason there aren't any scathing intellectuals anymore is that whenever anyone wants to construct and explore some idea, there are about 50 other people waiting to make the perfectly illogical argument that anyone who wants to voice any ideas about one thing must also know everything about everything else, and if they don't, then they should just shut up and keep it to themselves.

This makes no sense - the theory that fresh graduates can regurgitate from lectures informs their early decision making. Frequently these theories are constructed by people who do have considerable experience with real-life situations and that experience is what inspired their attempts to explain what they have seen and worked with. But reading the theory and experiencing its origin in real life are two wildly different things. With experience these beginners will learn, either explicitly or implicitly, that the model doesn't fit all situations or all people. The consequences of their actions will catch up with them and, with time, they'll learn to be better at their jobs (just as you did when you started out). This seems obvious and clear enough.

What isn't clear (and what probably doesn't help the situation) is why so many of you are getting upset. It's almost as if you expect that someone with an education should be better than you at your job, and you're now pointing out examples where that fails to be the case to prove that they're not. This seems stupid, of course you're going to know better than them since you have more practice at your job than they do. This fact does not mean that the skills and knowledge they bring with them are useless, just that they need practice to make any real practical use out of them.

And Sneaky, I'm surprised at you. You have a degree in the area you work in. You're also fortunate enough to have relevant life experience that helps inform your work, probably more than your education ever has. Surely you can't expect everyone in your area of work to have that. I would have thought that you would use what you have to help them fill in the gaps in their knowledge.

Maybe I'm just being naive about the real world.
