Default What inspires you to be a better person?
Watching people I know succeed often inspires me to work harder in order to surpass them.

To hell with working towards being a better person... Just do a Tonya Harding on their arse I say.

Something tells me you might be heading for that treatment in the not too distant future, Vlad...

I'm keen, I just don't know where to begin. We're talking about practically everyone I know, except for the guy that does night shift in the kitchens at the casino.

I must admit, I'm not very impressed with you either at the moment.

I'm more interested to know what constitutes a 'better person'.

Buuuut, being more agreeable, I'll say that I get most of my inspiration on how to act by reading.

Yup, I take social lessons from characters.
Sometimes words are not sufficient to delineate an experience, whether it is physical or metaphysical. Love is such an experience, but just because it cannot be so absolutely defined, does not negate its presence. Instead, the very nature of encountering such a depth of feeling is tribute to love as a phenomenon that is so intricate that given all the complexities of the English language it is still inadequate.

I don't like reading as much as listening to audiobooks.

What constitutes a better person? Lots of qualities... depending on the persons role or job or responsibilities... there can be so many things to list...

... a better person is unselfish...

So long as you're not talking about altruism, then I suppose I would say not being selfish is a decent quality.

Though it's all a matter of subjectivity and semantics. Blah.

What's wrong with altruism...
Why not provide something of value to others?

Nothing wrong with providing something of value to others. But that's merely being kind at the least, and generous at best.

I don't believe 'true' altruism exists. There is no true form of selflessness, and altruism by popular definition is behaviour governed only with regard to others (Selflessness).

Actually there's rarely 100% selflessness...though I think my mom is at 92%...

so okay rephrase a better person... is more than 70% selfless

Quite a few moms come across as selfless as they're always doing things for the family...

anyway that's drifting away ...

I find it strange to use percentiles. D: But, I know what you're trying to say. Overall, a better person, you believe, is someone who priorities others before themselves.

I suppose it has a noble ring to it, even if it is an uncommon trait.

I think my sleepiness is making me more pedantic.

@statement about mothers: That's partial instinct/hormonal, and part learned behaviour. But further discussion on that would teeter on derailing the thread.

Are you planning on becoming a lawyer? If so, in what area of law?

My self prescribed bedtime limit is 1AM. I will hopefully stick to it.

Maybe I'll become more self-disciplined, and thus a better person!

@Question: A good lawyer.

A morally (At least by the current socially accepted compass) good lawyer.

I know, farfetched! =[ But I'll do my best, even if I'm in the minority.

Nah. In reality, I have no clue. All I know is, is that I'm staying away from Criminal & Family specialisation.

Is it selfless of them or are they just ensuring that their offspring survive and prosper to pass on their genes. Surely true selflessness would be directed at people who have no biological attachments to you.

Cheer up Chirpy
Give me a smile
What happened to that smile I used to know
Don't you know your grin has always been my sunshine?
Let that sunshine show
Come on Chirpy
No need to frown
Deep down you know the world is still your toy
When the world gets heavy
Never pit-a-pat 'em
Up and at 'em boy
Someday, sweet as a song
Chirpy's lucky day will come along
Til that day you've gotta stay in strong Chirpy
Up on top is right where you belong
Look up Chirpy
You'll see a star
Just follow it and keep your dream in view
Pretty soon the sky is gonna clear up Chirpy
Cheer up Chirpy do
Cheer up Chirpy
Just be glad you're you

You can be selfless with people related or unrelated

Never mind true or untrue or whatever

You either are or you're not

To what degree ? Does t matter.

I'd like to know how posts keep disappearing. I like to come back and laugh at them at least three times. But they've been removed? Did they breach the SameSame cheese policy?
o
Edit: Oh, I see one can delete one's own posts now. Shouldn't there be some kind of "post deleted" message?

If there was a samesame "cheese policy" the ladies lounge would become non-existent.
