Bump!

Folks this thread is a good reminder if you are planning to do drugs this year at Mardi Gras, make sure you have planned before hand and know the risks and consequences of your actions.

There were stacks of dogs and they were working the line to get in. It was really intimidating and everyone in the line was in a flap. Obviously a lot of rectal carrying going on judging by the discarded rubbers in the hordern bathrooms on arrival. All ver unsavory and undignified. Also quite ineffective judging by all the dealers working the crowd. Took a large part of the shine off the event.

This is one reason why I haven't been to Arq in years. The other is because it's shithouse.

firstly, what on earth is harvest festival?

secondly because ive never heard of it may mean that its not as big as Mardi gras party and the bigger the event the more chances of getting arrests. Thats why there is more police attention at MG then some festival in parramatta.

Gay or straight most big dance parties in syd and melb have heaps of police at the gates doing searches. Like it or not its thier job.

Maybe you've never heard of it beacuse it's not gay? It was a huge music festival ( Portishead, Flaming Lips, the National etc) and easily had more people than the mardigrasland. All I'm saying is that the police presence was minimal..and there were lots of people in the crowd who were more than "naturally cheerful"

To search you for drugs they have to have "reasonable grounds"to beleive that you have drugs on you, the courts have held that reasonable grounds is more than mere suspicion.
The "reasonable grounds"they are obviously relying on is that the dog indicated that you have drugs on you.
However a recent report found that in about 80% of cases people hit on by the dog did not have any drugs on them.
I would be arguing that since in the vast majority of times that the dog indicates people have drugs on them it turns out they don't then a dog hitting on you can't be classed as reasonable grounds to beleive you have drugs on you, as the dog is usually wrong.

OT but this reminds me of the time I went to darling harbour with a big group of friends. Some random middle aged man walks right up to me amongst a group of about 20 and asks me if I have any 'lollies'. So far off was this person's assumption based on my appearance that, after shaking my head with a confused look on my face, I turned to one of my friends and asked 'why is that guy after lollies? Couldn't he just buy sweets from a nearby cafe or something?'.

Needless to say, they all laughed at me.

I have to admit that I haven't been to a Mardi Gras/Sleaze et al dance party in a very long time. In fact, the last time I went, the only "pat downs" you were likely to get was when you went to the "mens" after about midnight & someone had removed the light bulbs & it was a seething mass of overly-charged male sexuality.

I cant comment on the morality of recreational drugs, I experimented when I was younger, so dont want to be a hypocrite, or whether the police should be at EVERY dance party (regardless of it being gay or straight) - I just think it's sad that they seem to have (from what I've heard & read) all these resources to bust party-goers for "personal use", but when it comes to keeping the Oxford Street bars & surrounds safe, especially during the summer "poofter-basher" months, those same resources seem to disappear or dwindle.

I agree. They only march because it's a good PR exercise for NSW Police, they dont really show any support for the GLBTIQ community. They're tooooooooo busy busting punters at the party. Where are they when there's GLBTIQ violence on and around the strip? Guess they get more "busts" for their figures outside the party then doing actual police work keeping people safe on the streets?????

I wish the police had more powers to punish peeps. I work at dance parties from time to time and drug use/abuse is widespread, even amongst minors. I fear that these minors will perpetuate this culture of mutedness. If a society wants to stamp-out this drug-abuse, where does it start? I say, start before starts. Stop the young doing it. Anyhow, these underage kids the big dance parties shouldn't be drinking, but the all manage to get pissed as. They shouldn't be smoking inside, but they do that anyway regardless of your protests. Are each generation much the same? IS prohibition feasible/ possible? I only hope they all hav high health insurance premiums - bastards.

Drug abuse widespread at dance parties?? Really? Shock horror! Well you may call it abuse because you don't wish to indulge however those who do like it call it use. It is possible to use drugs in a moderate way just as it is alcohol which is may i remind you a drug.
Personally I find people who just cannot let go and live a little really boring aka square. Life is short go get off your tree and have a little fun before its too late

Horse shit. I don't care if other people take drugs, that's their choice. I don't want to, that's my choice. People on both sides of this fence need to get over it. Not everyone has the same definition of a 'good time'.

While drug use is illegal and semi-legal I suppose the police are doing their job catching people with small amounts for personal use, however I take issue with the fact that according to the first poster and some others they were stripsearching people. Given that in about 80% of cases the people don't have drugs on them when the dogs indicate they might, the cops shouldn't be conducting humiliating and degrading stripsearches on people on such flimsy evidence that it really amounts to nothing but a fishing expedition. Funninly I have never heard of them stripsearching people as opposed to a pat down search after a sniffer dog indicates on them exept in the first post here.
What I have observed around the streets of inner sydney is the cops just ask people to turn out their pockets or opent their handbags if the dog sits near them.
And I bet at the straight music festivals they don't have stripsearch tents set up. Seems like they only go to those extremes at gay events.
Clover if you are listening? Please write to the police minister and demand that the humiliating and degrading stripsearching of people indicated on by a sniffer dog be banned, and only a pat down search be allowed.
