Is Gina Rineharts buying up of Fairfax shares just a investors descision or is it is grab at media manipulation.

I don't see how it could be a smart investment considering print media is going down the tubes. I've no doubt she'd like a few more pro-mining stories run.

Also she does seem really unpleasant for some reason.

did she work really hard to become that rich? i doubt it. she inherited the wealth and makes money by digging australia's non-renewable minerals.

I know this is going to go down like a lead balloon, but in a way I don't blame her. The Goose declared war on the miners, and Gina Rhinehart in particular, months ago. If he wants to have a class war then it's only reasonable that those who he declared war have right of reply.

I seriously wonder just how "evil" she is and how much of it is just down to the fear perpetuted by the Goose and co.

All Julia Gillard has said basically is 'share the wealth' and that all Australians have the right to profit from Australia's natural resources boom. That sounds fair enough. Gina Rinehart is entitled to spend her wealth on whatever she wants. Not all of us will like that.

I think a free press is vital to Australia being maintained as a great democracy. Balance in investigative journalism, objectivity and freedom of speech are all important.

Gina Rinehart is certainly a formidable woman. Her wealth is awe-inspiringly intimidating. I hope her shares in Fairfax don't interrupt the steady flow of how news is reported in print and on-line objectively.

Rinehart bought a 10 per cent stake in Channel 10 two years ago. She invested $166 million in the network and gaining a position on the board.

It has given its primetime to 'The Project" which is Uber-PC and stars Waleed Aly and that old Lefty George Negus.

I dont think the public should be telling people what business company they can and cant buy into, anymore than the public should be telling people what houses they are allowed to buy in what suburb. Clearly she has one big issue - the mining tax. If she exerts influence in a media outlet to try and get is scrapped or watered down further, then boo hoo. Mining isnt everything, once that issue has past, fairfax will resume as normal. I hardly think this sinister woman has more dastardly evil deeds up her sleeve . I think the first-born of every family is pretty safe from being euthanised.

You'd have to not like your money very much to buy into fairfax as an investor looking to make money

she has billions of money and can afford to lose some in a sour investment for the purpose of not making money but influencing people.

I think she knows exactly what she is doing. Covering all bases. The shares decline..good tax loss. If her kids decide to want to share more family secrets she may be able to influence what is NOT printed. Keep your enemies close.

I think just the fact that she is going through court action against her own children to prevent paying them the inheritance they were granted by the late Lang Hancock in his will, shows exactly what her character is like. She is clearly a very sour, selfish and arrogant woman who believes that she doesnt have to adhere to legal documents authorised by her own father and presumably a legitimate legal representative.

I mean seriously. She has more than enough wealth herself, now that she is officially the richest woman in the world, what could she possibly gain from preventing her own children from getting a piece of the pie, which in reality, is a drop in the ocean by comparison to her overall wealth.

I think its clear why this family has had many many years of bitter dispute over 2 generations. Gina Rinehart is seemingly the "common denominator".

The only assumptions Im making are those relating to her well documented actions in the court system against members of her own family, who she is preventing from recieving funds allocated to them in the will of Lang Hancock, her father. You are right, I dont know her private life, but the facets of her life that she has willingly made public record through her own actions, are enough to demonstrate just what a grotesque human being she is. Greedy, arrogant and certainly having no regards for her fathers wishes. Her father being the reason she has all this money in the first place. Thats where you are wrong though. Clive Palmer is equally as ambitious, successful, misunderstood and has a few billion in his bank account too. Yet he is regarded as one of Australias most respected, colourful and interesting business people. Why? Because he also happens to be a nice guy by most accounts.

As for Gina Rinehart, I couldnt care less how much she has in her bank account. My personal dislike for her is purely out of her repeated and ongoing attempts to stop other members of her own family from getting what they are entitled to in accordance with her fathers wishes in his will, despite the fact that her father had lodged legal documentation well before his death, which states that a particular trust fund containing many many millions of dollars be passed onto, and distributed amongst his grandchildren at a designated point in time.

Many seem to have forgotten that ultimately, Gina Rinehart inherited her business from her father, when he passed away. Of course, she is well entitled to run that business now as she sees fit. However, she has a moral and legal obligation to honour the wishes of her father in accordance to his will. And yet she continues to clog up the court system in her greedy attempts to stop the next generation of Rineharts from recieving what they were allocated by Lang Hancock.

Oh please, Clive Palmer one of the most repected business people? The CIA backs the Greens? Titanic II? His announcement a few months ago that he was going into politics? Each and every one received with great guffaws of laughter. Clive Palmer is generally considered to be one of the biggest jokes in Australia, not one of the most respected.
