It's interesting how there seems to more outrage over Gloria Jeans, than the discrimination that we GLBT in Queensland are going to face under the LNP government. Says it all really.

It's a shame this 'gay panic defence' exists. Any reasonable person can intuit when they're being seduced, regardless of sexuality or gender.

No need to panic. A simple,'no, thank you, I'm not interested' usually suffices.

This is the whole issue: the perception that gay men are predatory and will have sex with any male they see. Not true. Individuals are desperate, not whole communities.

Awareness of self is good. You can either see a 'pick up' as either a threat or a compliment and within the boundaries of what you find safe and acceptable you simply go from there. No 'gay panic defence' needs to exist. Individual circumstances may surface but to base a whole defence on the sexuality of the alleged person is ridiculous. Disappointing to see the 'gay panic defence' on the books in QLD. Sad.

More importantly than that, it's alarming. No person has the right to infringe upon the safety and well-being of another and to use a 'gay panic defence' is an insult. It's a worry. No hate crime should ever be validated through the law. This is Australia.

Boycott Qld tourism?

How is that a smart idea?

Also, what would the relevance be to changing this law... All that would do is further bankrupt business owners whose sole income is based on Qld tourism...

Very well thought idea! Bravo!

A well supported boycott could put enough pressure on the government, pressure brought on by people living from tourism, to make the necessary changes to stop the boycott.

I think the Montgomery Bus Boycott is a very nice example of the power of boycotts.

I understand that...

But QLD is a state supported by construction and tourism... Two things that have been completely wiped out recently...
Why put these poor people in even more pain? I understand the reasoning, but at what cost?

Obliterating family business?

Oh I totally agree, it would be terrible to make innocent people pay the price for something they're not responsible for. It would be a disaster short term but long term it would be terrific of course. Thing is that loads of people can't even survive a short term drop in earnings..

It would be so much nicer if people didn't need pressure to make 'm fight for the right causes.

There is no outrage because the people of Queensland deserve this government as you all voted for them in great numbers. Enjoy them!

As far as I am concerned we should just build a Berlin style wall all around Queensland.

@Doolander Boycotting queensland is a wonderful idea. Why should we support such a vile bigot state in any shape or form?

Well heterosexual Queenslanders won't speak up in support for GLBT people, so I say "stuff them".

Well the "gay small business people" are humans right? The way I see it is that if you "hurt" the owners of a business by the LNPs homophobic stance your also going to harm the business. Remember business owners are humans and will leave the state and sack there staff, if they themselves do not want to live in homophobic state. So if you want to see who is ignorant just look at the people who say the LNP governs "for everybody". The LNP only wants to impose it's religious ideology on everybody and it's going to hurt the state and business, only the "ignorant" cannot or refuse to see that. And finally there is no evidence to prove that a consertive state is better for business, it's just a myth from socially conservative people who also claim that a socially consertive government will reduce the crime rate by there policies. I have seen though the LNP bullshit.

you're not "hurting" them, you will kill their business.

I don't know why you're using so many quotation marks in your response...

Finally, if business turns sour, it's not only a case of them sacking their staff, who are most likely also going to be part of the GLBT community, they will be left in huge debt and a failed business....

You're not thinking this out... Too short sighted...

I think the quotation marks are meant to signify an irony as though to distance the person from the meaning of the word.

In some states of the USA, major business has spoken out against gay marriage bans as it hurts there business. So what I'm saying is that homophobic stance by the LNP state government is going to hurt business.

Oh and their homophobic stance will not kill business as effectively as your "boycott"

Well keep supporting the LNP then, won't bother me much longer as I'm out of this state in the new year. The writing is clearly on the wall, it's just sad some people choose not to see it.

I don't understand what you're still doing here then?

Maybe you should sack your staff and close your business up and move interstate...

Or even sell your home and buy something interstate?

Ideally, the threat of a boycott would kickstart people's social awareness, conscience, responsibility.
Money over people, this reality will always be a major mindfuck.

A boycott could backfire, so I don't support a boycott. Basically the Queensland population knowlingly voted in the LNP knowing it's anti-gay stance. So that's why in a previous comment I said "stuff them". For the record, I would have no problem with the LNP if they did not take our GLBT rights away that we finally achieved under Labor. So no amount of fixing the state economy is going to make up for taking my rights away, and I know many GLBT feel the same way. It's upset me so much so that I'm leaving QLD. At the end of the day it's 2012 and we should not be worried about a political party taking our rights away. Also in the USA most big companies are coming out against gay marriage bans as they state it's bad for business, which has given me the belief that if a homophobic state in the USA is bad for business, then so is a homophobic state in Australia. Which is also why I believe that the LNP will be worse than a gay "boycott" for business. As I've said previously, there is no evidence that a socially consertive government is better for business. So the writing I see on the wall is that qld GLBT LNP supporters will be blaming federal Labor in about 12 months time and those same GLBT LNP supporters will also have had there rights taken away.

I have not decided between Sydney or Melbourne, Im leaning towards Melbourne but the thought of those cold winters are putting me off. However because I work in a call centre I feel I'm more likely to gain employment in Sydney and there seems to be cheaper rental options available from what I've seen on gumtree.com.

A KILLER who used the so-called "gay panic" defence after bashing a man to death in a Maryborough churchyard has walked free from prison, just four years into a nine-year sentence. The mother of their victim, Joyce Kujala, has slammed the sentences, saying if her son's killers had not been able to use the "gay panic" defence, Pearce would still be in prison.
