And that old womans chestnut, kick them in the balls. If you are being attacked the attacker wont stand there with his legs apart and arms by his side and let you take careful aim and try to kick him.
If I was teaching self defence I would teach avoidance and other non physical strategies.
First don't trust any stranger.
Secondly if you run into someone on the street and they start talking to you then stand out of striking range, so if they are going to attack you then they will have to step closer to you, and you will say, hello, what's going on here, and as soon as they step closer to you straight away step back again out of range.
Also be aware of signals, a lot of muggers and attackers want to suss out their potential victims before they attack, to see if they are likely to fight back. So they will say, got a light, or got the time?
Your response will often determine if they attack or not, that is if you reply with a loud and assertive voice they will think you will not be a passive victim, and look elsewhere.
Martial arts? Only good if you train regularly. If you are going to poke them in the eyes then you have to train a lot so you are able to hit the spot you are aiming for, otherwise you will probably just poke them in the forehead and hurt your fingers.
Also if you are walking down a street in a dodgy area, walk fast. Don't amble along and be a sitting target, sometimes it will take them a bit of time to suss you out from a distance and decide whether you are a good victim, walk fast and be past before they can decide.
And if you are walking down a street and someone tries to stop you, say on the pretext of asking the time, tell them in a firm voice but don't stop, keep walking.
A very good part of self defence is being able to read people, and that only comes with life experience.
Many times I have been walking down the street and maybe I see some guys walking towards me, reading people taught me something was not right about them, although often you can't actually point to something obvious, it's just a sense, and I cross the road, and it usually turns out I was right.
I think in most cases if you have to physically defend yourself you have fucked up already.
