I find taking a photo with your phone gets them running,

I do feel sorry for the little one's on their skateboards having to come out in this way, It was much easier in my day...... poor little things - all of their gadgets have rendered them disadvantaged and unable to speak!

We must be better than them - and quite frankly we were born better, so why bring ourselves down?

They may have been heading to Bodyline for an apre skate shower????????

No.
But then again transgender women are much more unempowered and marginalised than gay people, so it hurts more.
But then again I might have a laugh about it if I heard a gay man call a homophobe a "Tranny". Depends on the situation. But generally I wouldn't like it.

So we should address power imbalance by resorting to abuse, perhaps inciting violence?

In fact that's why they do it in the first place, because they think you wont bite back.
Do you see them going down the street abusing a hells angels member? No, because they are scared they will get whacked. That's why they do it to gays, lesbians or transgender people, or minority groups who they think will not hit back, because they think such people will not hit back.
If you don't hit back you just enhance their sense of power over tother people.

There is a difference between being defenceless in things like this, as opposed to not biting back.

What I was inferring was that if his happens to you, and you continually show your indifference to them, they will get tired of it... I know this sounds like basic advice, but I think a lot of the time people forget the power of indifference; It shows that they cannot hurt you, this is miles apart from not being able to defend oneself...

The best self defence is to avoid a bad situation! You only ever need to defend yourself if you are physically attacked or physically overpowered, then all you need to do is fight your way out of the situation and escape.

When you bite back all you do is antagonise the situation and in my opinion, you're just looking for a fight.

yeah, but if theyre 15yrs old theyre kids and that age most are smart arses and also insecure. i heard a great old one-liner by a drag in qld who said to someone heckling her, "yeah! well i'm more of a man than you are and more of a woman than youre ever likely to fucken get, so piss off!". it sure shut him up and he looked like he was in his 40s. no vilification but it packed a punch

Well simoneybabe was talking about 15 yr olds, not arabs driving around in a car. Ya scream anything at any guys driving around in a car and SURE ya going to get trouble and a possible physical confrontation. But she wasnt talking about older guys, she was talking about 15yr olds. The fact that ya say anything to 15yr old in a derogatory fashion is going make them back off. So why not. And if THEY consider the word "poofter" or "faggot" as a put bdown, then it might shut them up.

Don't make the mistake of thinking you know the kind of person I am, or the surrounds I grew up in M8

My post was plain and simple (Although a little brutal to be honest)

You're right though, words do have power, they have as much power as you want to give them... When someone hurls abuse at you, their abuse only has as much weight behind it as you want it to have. If you don't care, quickly they'll realise they don't care, because hey, who wants to torment someone that doesn't bite back?

Don't reinforce what they already think by playing their game... Change the game on them, and they'll stop playing, it's as simple as that...

That being said, I understand there will always be exceptions to this...

True. And maybe this situation was one of those exceptions. Possible?

One will never know now, as the situation wasn't handled that way to begin with...

the only prob with 15yr 2day is that a lot of em carry knives & being immature they mite take offence 2 u calling them a fag. then wot happens. emergency ward somewhere with a knife wound. not having a go at u biglebby just think in situations like this calling a 15yr a fag mite backfire.
