Default GLBTIQ Nursing Homes? Will they exist?
I actually posted this thread in the GENDER DIVERSITY forum, but am now wondering if I should have put it here? Here goes! Afriend of mine works as a nurse in a Sydney hospital & one of her patients is transgender (old term = "pre-op transsexual") and is over the age of 70yrs and has had a stroke. Problem is, until this patient's mobility improves, she can't go home and will need repite (if not possible permanent) residential care in a nursing home. Apparently the hospital contacted the GENDER CENTRE for advice, but it seems the GC hasn't come across this problem before! Got me thinking!!! Although this won't effect me for a long time, unless through incapacitating injury, has anyone given thought to what will happen to GLBTIQ people in the future when or if we need that kind of care?? I remember hearing, I think, of a possible GLBTIQ Retirement Village possibly starting up somewhere in Victoria, but that's no the same as needing either a hostel or nursing home?? Any thoughts??

Unfortunately being a "Junior" (*starts chuckling*) member, I still can't post links. But if you google "gay retirement village australia" ; scroll down and click on the May 2012 article "Advocates hail Australia's gay retirement village/ABC Radio". Seems they're thinking of building this age care facility near Ballan in Victoria.

Interestingly. I had no idea (pardon my ignorance) that although States have laws against discrimination on sexuality and gender identity - there are no Federal laws against this discrimination! Can anyone enlighten me, please, how this can be and why it hasn't been rectified?

And although I'm not quite in that age bracket that needs to worry about a nursing home just yet, (although a lot of the younger posters on same same make me feel positively prehistoric) I have to admit.......I'm thinking of travelling down to Victoria for a holiday.......and if I happen to visit Ballan.......it's JUST a coincidence!!!!!!!
