ACL urges boycott of 7's Sunrise
I posted this comment at the ACL's website, but in case they choose not to publish it, I'll post it here, too:
%u201CThat a TV current affairs show, let alone TV station, should take sides in such a highly contentious issue in the public square is disgraceful. What it says for the respect they have for alternative opinion, even our values, is extremely disappointing and we need to register our disappointment.%u201D
Yes, and I%u2019m sure you%u2019d be just as disappointed if they%u2019d decided to take your side against full marriage equality for all consenting adult couples, wouldn%u2019t you? Would you be disgusted if the press, supposedly the neutral umpire and facilitator of public debate, were to allow itself to be captured by the propaganda machine of the anti-equality lobby? Or would you proclaim to the heavens and all who would listen about what a valuable ally you had in your fight against common human decency?
If you find that your opinion %u2013 that some Australians don%u2019t deserve full equality under the law %u2013 is not being respected, maybe it%u2019s time to reconsider that opinion, and evaluate whether it is indeed worthy of respect?
Like all Australians, you have the right to express your views. What you do not have is the right to not have those views disagreed with in any way. And you%u2019d better start getting used to being disagreed with, because you%u2019re plainly in the wrong, as were the people who fought against full equality for indigenous Australians, or the right of women to vote, or the right of any other section of the community to be treated as fully equal under the law.
