Default Equality? Or Something Better?
Dr Jodie Taylor is fantastic and the talk sounds really interesting. I wish I could be there for this.

This was good apart from the whole 'Equality or something better' idea... I mean, that almost implies that she thinks we should be viewed as better than straight people...? Better than equal means greater. I don't get that.

I took it as questioning whether equality means we should assimilate to the mainstream, or can we have equality and our own unique sub-culture as well?

Hopefully this idea will be clearer after the talk tomorrow... or maybe it will be more confused... in any case I'm looking forward to it!

This was a great talk! Covered a range of things from the over representation and portrayal of the stereotypical gay male (white middle class, hetero normative) in the media. The commercialisation of Brisbane's gay culture, with some events making gay almost a theme (i.e. on par with an 80's night), in addition to the targeted events generally being run by volunteers at a loss or any profits going to the artists or back into the community. Also explored the term Queer and it being transient in definition.

Whilst on the surface I easily fit into the steretype of a gay man, on considering Dr Taylor's talk I actually realised this had been an issue for me. I don't really identify with the gay scene of drugs and dance parties, I may statistically fit into middle class but I grew up working class and still hold many of these values. Was definitely an "ah hah" moment of recognition for me.

Would love to know if the talk will be published... many sources were mentioned that I cannot recall but would like to read more of!
