Default The Bindi saga contines
Thank God she will have amassed the savings to pay for years for post-child-star psychiatry:
Bindi, and her mother, Terri, appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show in Los Angeles, telling the audience she wanted to "try and be" her father.

"I feel like I'm him. All over.
Mmm. Healthy.

The Bindi bandwagon will gather momentum over the weekend when she helps launch Australia Week in LA and New York.

I really do fear for that child. Something tells me she hasn't processed this at all. She's just so upbeat. When is it going to sink in? How many "Bindi Kidfitness" DVDs have to be sold before this child realises that things are not as they seem?

It's troubling.
She's like a really poorly dressed Jon Benet.

I really feel for the little girl who was plunged into the limelight by the media after the tragic loss of her famous dad. Any child her age would relish all this attention. It's not unnatural for her to want to be like her dad, the man she idolised and loved dearly. She may not have had the time to take in the real loss in her life, but maybe her mother doesn't quite know how to cope either, and allows her daughter, who seems to genuinely enjoy the media attention, the happiness all this brings her. I don't doubt it will all catch up to her but please don't make it sound like she's anything but a child who misses her dad, loves being an environmental advocate and helping out where she feels she can do it best.

I stayed up late especially last night to watch Bindi on Ellen on Foxtel (well, does 10:30pm on a Friday night count as late?)

She was like a little robot, and even the normally unruffable Ellen didn't quite know what to do with her. Ellen kept on saying "aren't you cute?" and "how old are you again?" referring to the fact that Bindi is like Dakota Fanning, a 30 year-old stuck in a child's body.

The really freaky thing was that Bindi just kept on repeating "I want to be him" referring to her dad, but the way she kept on saying it was like her way of dealing with him dying was to replace him with herself, literally. It was one of the oddest things I've ever seen on Ellen and she was visibly uncomfortable with Bindi's freakishness.

Here is the video of Bindi on Ellen:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=I-8YP7vtk1A

My fave parts:

1. Her skipping on stage and flicking her hair just like she practised with mum 400 times in the mirror that day. "Get it right!"

2. The end of the interview where Ellen can't quite figure out how to wrap it up without Bindi repeating "thank you."

Ahh, showbiz kids.

Perhaps Australia's equivalent to Drew Barrimore?
I hope for her sake the media doesnt chew her up and spit her out like it has done to so many others.

I'm with you Zakalwe.
I also fear tall poppy syndrome is alive and well today. The kid obviously enjoys what she's doing, and she seems bright enough to me. Let her do what she wants and cut out the attacks. She's doing no harm to anyone. Her mother knows her best and I doubt very much she'd knowingly put her child at risk of harm.
I can’t understand the Australian culture's need to bring down anyone who is on top of their game. So what if she's gregarious and a little bit show pony? Look at the girl's face when she's talking about the animals and her precious Australia Zoo. She's happy!
Media attention will fizzle in time, but she'll still be doing what she loves best. And I see no harm in her desire to emulate her beloved father. As a child, I wanted to be just like mine too.

OK - so up until yesterday I thought Bindi was like some Children of the Damned creature who found the ritalin bottle. In fact I would have said she is the freakiest thing to have graced the small screen since V.I.C.I. (pronounced Vicky) from that horrendous American sitcom about the robot girl living in suburbia with her adopted family (Small Wonder - it was on in the late 80s).

However did anyone see the Steve Irwin special "Crikey, What an adventure!", on Channel 9 at 10.30pm last night?

It was about Steve's life - and showed qutie a lot of footage of Steve interacting with Bindi. My god - the girl is a walking, talking version of him - and has been trained to be a confident tv personality who LOOOOOOVES animals since birth. She is not freaky - she is her father. (Who admiteddly was a bit freaky.... which I guess makes her still a bit freaky.. hmm...)

Now I feel really sorry for her and her family. Steve was so over the top - I think they are all struggling with filling a huge hole. (And not a honey hole... if you have been reading the other forums).

No. I'm just going through some old archived threads and reviving the ones I think are topical, timeless, appropriate, interesting. The threads of late have been hum-drum, I think, I want to bring back the big conversation starters...this Bindi thread is both funny & sad...

Ah ok, fair enough.

I saw Bindi on the news the other day. Handing over an award to Rove for his conservation work... She STILL seems completely out of it. She's way too happy and "mature" for a kid her age. Very sad indeed :S

She needs to be put in a childcare centre, and then run over.
It is no measure of health- to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

She needs to be put in one of those childcare centres that turn up on a current affair

Yes well the girl was bloody traumatised by the death of her father like most kids would be especially at that age.

She has been used time and time again and I think some of it really may have been against her own will...you know like pursuading her to think how she does.

If she really wants to be like Steve then whatever but this is just FUCKED.

Call the DHS! (Victorian equivalent of DOCS)
