Default Political Rant :) hehe
I really can't stand them.
Instead of being media whores and going on Good News Week and other forms of shows which have no political benefit.

lead the country. stop trying to be popular and do your job.

and personally I think Garrett should be fired. People got fired for alot less.

rant over. Surely I am not the only one.

But isn't it their job to be popular? Do you object to the fact they go on 'light-weight' TV shows as opposed to 'heavywight' current affairs?

Agree re Garrett should have been sacked; he had plenty of advice detailing the pitfalls of rushing the scheme so he had no excuse. Although, if he did delay the opposition would have torn him a new one so damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I personally dont care much for Garrett but to say he should have been sacked is a bit of a stretch....

Yes some insulation installers were acting in an unsafe manner and yes a few people died. However Garrett and his departments total contribution was a rebate that helpeded home owners to get insulation. The Government did not run or own ANY of the insulation businesses operating under the scheme, they were in fact their OWN PRIVATE businesses. Who in many cases were breaching OHS obligations under the law....which by the way is the responsibility of another Government department...

Are you seriously saying that the Government is responsible for private businesses? So do you think they should take them all over...????

Its like saying that whenever a person dies in hospital the health minister should be sacked cause it sure aint the doctors/nurses/hospitals/ambos fault.

Papers encouraging the opposition beat up...thats what I hate...end rant!

end of the day. people have died due to the governments faults. some1 needs to be held responsible.
I dont think there job is to be popular to a degree. Theres popular politically and then there is popular celebrity and it is as if rudd is trying to be a celebrity.
I voted for him. Dont get me wrong, but i think appearing on those shows is just wrong.

Of course not - however I think we need to make a distinction between 'operational' and 'strategic'. Operationally, if installers didn't meet the standards then you can't fault the department for that as they've set (and raised) the standards required.

My understanding though (and of course please correct me if I've misunderstood) is that there were several reports conducted independently that alerted the department to risks around the pool of qualified installers available and concerns resulting from the rush to implement the scheme. It seems that these strategic concerns were not acted upon? If that's the case then that's a 'hangable' offence in my book.

yeah but the reality is that most people don't look at policy. they look at who they like the most. ie. popularity. so the media advisors tell them to go on shows like rove to become popular with a new target group.

No, actually, people died because they didn't follow safe guidelines. There are OH&S issues at play here and the employer is ultimately responsible for the employee's safety. It's not like the government were handing the batts out to people and telling them it was fine to lay over electricity. They just gave out the subsidy. The media just went a bit nuts going after Garrett.

It'd be like asking the health minister to resign every time there's a death in a hospital.

I think Garrett is in there due to populism. He is not a career polly and his inexperience shows. He is a trained lawyer/popstar? To some extent politics is all about populism?
I dont know whether he should be sacked? Has he in reality been sacked?
But I'm adamant Tony A is a total whore.

No no. It was Anthony who spilt his yogurt on the TV, not Wysi.
