I recently joined globe http://globemelbourne.com.au/
you'd probably find a fair number of social groups at Midsumma today as well

The triva night at the old xchnage is on Mondays sweets - its drag bingo on tuesdays. The Laird has a trivia night on Wednesdays and if Mamas not mistaken, DTS has one on Tuesdays
Drag Queens are like oil paintings - sometimes you gotta stand way back to get the full effect.

It would be good if there was a social group with gay guys in it who are not interested in the usual cliche' stuff (no nightclubs, no kylie, no recreational drugs, no getting drunk on every occasion, etc) but I guess that would be asking too much

I like to go to the theatre, not every ballet or opera but I do like musical comedy a lot. I am happy to join in a dinner of counter meal or just a beer,

However there are many groups in Melb and you need to indicate what your interests are to get suggestions.

I live south of the yarra, close to the city.

there is group called Art for girls and boys that arranges visits to galleries to view exhibitions and then grab lunch at a nearby pub. I've only been once, and it was great, the occassions could do with being a bit more regular.
interesting that so many people want to get out of the clubs and do something a bit more constructive. There used to be a group called Men For Dinner - but I think it died a death after many years-
I guess it all comes down to what people's interests are -- if there is no focus for the group - you're just back to standing around feeling shitty because no one is talking to anyone.
anyone interested in a book club, or a photography group, or a painting group? I'd happily organise something if there was some interest along these lines---

just another thought--- how about in the summer a few 'cycling picnics' - no lycra and no $400,000 bicycles, just a few pleasant rides and a few pressed-cucumber sandwiches and thermos of tea in the saddlebag!

there looks to already be a pretty well organised cycling group called bent kranks -- see other thread on this page --- not sure if they cycle on my side of town (south) yet.. and not sure if they have pressed-cucumber sandwiches, but will certainly check it out when the weather pulls it's head out of its arse!!
in the mean time --- how about some photography or painting.. I have an etching press if anyone would like to learn.

anybody want to get naked for me for a photo - all quite above board -- need a pose for a painting I want to do???
It's very front on - can disguise the face if you don't want to be recognised -- for my midsumma art exhibition 2013.
That's something to do!!! for someone - photo won't end up on internet - that would ruin my rep! need someone skinny -- if I needed a fatty boom-bah - I'd just use a mirror!!

I'm starting a bocce group at the Liella Road bocce thingo in Carnegie--- see my post under -- get me off the couch!
bring your own heavy thing to chuck!! what a good day for this ?? Sundays???
other ideas for things to do on the other posting....

what about joining a local Men's Shed--- I did -- its very butch ....
Our men's shed president was telling us 'blokes' that if at least 25% of our members had either been in the armed services, even if it was being in cadets at school, we could apply for a $50K grant for tools and machines... from the RSL I said "I slept with a sailor once- does that count???" That got a good laugh and then a bit of foot shuffling when I heard one chap whisper to another 'he means it' !!!!

Infiltrate --- that's the word of the day - if Gillard can hang out with Christian Lobbiest nutters - we can hang out in Men's sheds-- and we'll end up with a nice glory box and she'll end up taking the bookings and sweeping up at the hair salon!!!!

Default Gay Social Heading Your Way!
Hi guys,

I wanted to know what your opinion is on this... I am the Marketing Manager at AMF Bowling and looking to organise a "GAY Social".

What I wanted to do was have all Lanes opened and have like a round robin thing happening... Pool table will be there, Air hockey and M9 Laser.

We also are licensed. i would organise prizes and there will be music and all sorts of stuff including finger food...

Do you think this is something that many Gay's would enjoy doing???

This would be held at Clayton Bowling?

Sounds like a great idea, but whether anyone will come or not - who knows!.? I don't see why you should have to organise prizes, but it might get a few people interested. I reckon your problem will be getting it known about, these sorts of things need to build from my experience, and it will depend on whether you can afford to do this or not. It's not going to be a roaring success over night! Also depends who you're pitching at... Music? If I hear another bloody disco / thumping dance tune I'm likely to thump someone!
Good luck with it !

Default Thank you
Thank you for your response...

Prizes to be fun not confirmed...

However, it's more about the social event it's self we'll be encouraging singles more as we want it to be like a speed dating thing but on the lanes with bowling balls...

Music - trust me nothing doof doof just in the back ground to add to atmosphere ...

As for the money it's a big company happy with expenses.... (there would be a fee)

I had great advertising tools eg. Clubs, bars, drag shows etc

I just need to know is this something ppl would be interested in actually doing...

I think it's fun & less awkward meeting new ppl....

Thanks mate

Oh, Wow – so many possibilities spring immediately to mind

Perhaps the event can start off –at least initially- tangent to Midsumma/Eurovision/Mardi Gras or some other event on the calendar – this way the bowls event can get its feet on the ground within an established framework and have a bit more synergy involved than trying to go it totally alone. This also has the advantage of providing a ready theme/purpose/raison d’etre which might motivate people to come out who might not otherwise be bowling for bowling’s sake.

In terms of Prizes, I think fun and light-hearted is the way to go. More Chris-Cringle than Tats mega-jackpot. more inclusive, engaging, and exciting if there are on-going smaller prizes than one massive winner-takes-all sweep. For example, maybe the winner of the designated ‘Beer Frame’ gets a free jug for his team; or if someone gets a particular number of continuous strikes or spares, the win a frozen turkey.

Theme/costumes
. Another layer of fun can be added by having a theme to the evenings – could possibly change each time. For example a ‘Jungle Bowls’ could have people in Tarzan costumes or dressed like elephants or whatever. Additional prizes of course would be for the costumes and these prizes ought to reflect the particular theme.

Bowling with the Stars – maybe a local celebrity night can be organized where players from local gay sporting codes can be there two to a lane and the other punters get the opportunity to play on their teams.

Bowl for a difference – maybe some of the events can serve as a fund-raiser for particular charities/community organizations. Perhaps a part of the proceeds can be donated, or a ‘collection-well’ for cash donations set up or non-perishable tinned food items collected, or 2 dollars for every strike recorded that evening could be donated.

OF COURSE any/all of these can be combined to provide a truly memorable and entertaining evening.

For example, during Midsumma, there could be a charity “Bowling For the Stars”, Space-Themed (hey baby, wanna peer through my telescope ;-) )event, where punters pay twice the normal rate but get to be on teams including two players from Melbourne Chargers Rugby. There are prizes for the best inter-galactic costumes as well as score-card prizes throughout the evening. A donation can be made to a chosen organization from the door takes. And after two or three games, the evening becomes more of a social-mixer event, and the lanes are freed up for other customers.
