I am a financial planner who has a focus on supporting the Gay and Lesbian community by providing simple and easy to understand financial planning advice without the jargon.
The relationship between a financial planner and client is pretty rare. You go to a doctor and tell them about your health -- but not your goals, or dreams. You go to your accountant and tell them about your finances but not your health or potential family concerns. You go to a lawyer and talk to them about your estate plans but not your health.
When you see a financial planner their needs to be a high level of comfort and trust - which can be sometimes hard to find.
Basically the little bits of the puzzle you tell everyone else, ie your doctor, accountant, lawyer, friends and family, is told to your financial planner to get a whole picture of who you are, your concerns, potential problems and your goals. It is then my job to put the pieces together and help you make changes so that you can achieve your goals.
Many people in the LBGT community generally dont seek financial planning advice. One - because they dont want to come out to a complete stranger and Two - they find it hard to find a financial planner who has an intimate knowledge of same sex issues, whether it be in relation to Centrelink, taxation, or superannuation and therefore dont end up seeking advice. Which is a shame, as everyone (gay or straight) should take control of their finances!
If you are gay or lesbian and looking for financial planning assistance or a GLBTI business professional looking for networking opportunities please feel free to contact me.
Cheers Clinton
