I think what Penny is saying is that Labour wants a pat on the back for the good stuff it's done, so it knows to do more. That's the gist of it right?

I think rather the jist is look at what we have done - give us a break - and be happy that you've got the few crumbs we throw you to keep you quiet (ish)

once again she didn't say it was her position, just that it was the position of the party that she has to follow.

i don't like how everyone has to tow the line in the labour and the national parties, especially ministers.

they are allowed to express individual opinions in the liberal party.... but what would be the chance of a gay woman being selected by the liberals LOL.

How can you report this story without including what Richo said about Penny's behind-the-scenes work on marriage equality? Watch the clip from Q and A - it made me feel bad that Penny is stuck between a rock and a hard place... and that's she's fighting for us against a huge machine.

Yep, it's the problem with party solidarity and all that. I respect that she's in a very difficult position, and I'm pretty sure that should Labor be returned, we'll probably see movement on the policy at the next Labor conference.

I do kinda feel bad for people in that situation. At least she's out. There's a lot of politicians (Libs especially) who don't out themselves at all. That's the double standard and the hypocrisy.

she has said that australia is not ready and that it conflicts with religious and cultural history of this country. That is fucked and there is no excuse for her to perpetuate that bullshit.

I haven't seen her say that.

"On the issue of marriage I think the reality is there is a cultural, religious, historical view around that which we have to respect. The party’s position is very clear that this is an institution that is between a man and a woman. I am part of a party and I support the party’s policies."

^ i guess that could be interpreted both ways.

People have eggs in their eyes and they keep deluding themselves that things are moving forward in this country. Let them continue to think that way and they won't achieve marriage for another 100 years.

ha ha I admire your honesty but I think you can do better!

Look she also keeps saying that australia isn't ready despite so many major polls revealing otherwise.

Anyways I think we should all be directing our objections to all of them! There are few who have come out for gay marriage against their party so we should be applauding them also.

I agree with Milne that the problem is leadership, and I blame Gillard. She had only been PM for 6 days before proclaiming there was nothing wrong with the Marriage Act. Now THAT is an issue she should go to a "citizens' assembly" for, if ever there was one! It was no surprise to me that Rudd made same-sex marriage totally off limits but why has Gillard? I would say to avoid giving Abbott ANOTHER area in which to initiate an appalling scare campaign. I am kind of glad marriage equality is not in this election (obviously apart from Greens policy) because it would be a total shitfight and would really bring out all the poisons that lurk in the mud. I think after the election, however, there will be a real push for it. I am happy to concentrate on keeping Abbott out of government fr now, and worry about marriage equality after that. Let's face it - the prick would probably repeal all the other 80 legislation amendments Labor has made!

I agree that Graham Richardson's quotes need to make it into this article. Here's what he said after Milne:

"There are a lot of people in the Labor Party who don't agree with (gay marriage). At the moment there's nowhere near a majority but there will be. There will be over time because Penny will work for it and it will get up in the end. But give her a break, for God's sake. She's part of a caucus. There's a whole lot of them. She doesn't run the government, she's a part of it. A part of it. There's a think called cabinet solidarity...and if she wants to break it she gets nowhere. You'll lose someone who fights for your cause. That, my friends, is dumb. Big time dumb."

JG let us down by not leading the way and making this a civil rights issue, but PW is doing her best, I feel, to make the changes she can within the party.

Gillard has betrayed gay people for the sake of winning the election thinking that Abbott will use it against her. For heaven's sake Julia support the people who WOULD have voted for you because they will now VOTE GREEN, which is what i fully intend to do! I have always voted Liberal but the Greens get my vote specifically for their total support of gay marriage!

I think the GLBT section of our community need to promote their relationships more effectively as normal and natural so others are more accepting of them. For instance; I have been researching homosexuality in the animal kingdom and discover it is at the same rate as in mankind. Are the anti gay marriage and relationship lobby going to say that's not normal and natural too?
Rather than just protest the decision made by successive governments about the rights of GLBT people, I would like to see a clever marketing campaign aimed at the general populace to make them see homosexuality as normal and subsequently demand the government of the day change its thinking also.

if Penny wants to tow the party line then the party line has offered us nothing more then a half assed copout, different isn't equal. When you start compromising on this issue you are accepting that you are still a second class citizen. IMO keep the pressure on, keep it on hard. Penny is a politician she can take it and I'm sure deep down she wants what we all want but just not today.
