With the State election looming, it's time for ALP Housing Minister Richard Wynne to face facts. He has overseen sky-rocketing rents, a huge increase in the public housing waiting list and attempts to privatise public housing.

It's time we called the ALP to account and demand an end to the housing crisis.

Home guarantee

A RECENT survey found that about half of young people leaving care in Victoria were homeless within a year. Some are sent directly from child protection into homeless services. Others tread the well-worn pathway of couch surfing, rooming houses and squatting. Disturbingly, research shows that many will go on to experience chronic homelessness, drifting in and out of the homelessness system for many years.
Clearly this is not good enough when Victoria has some of the most advanced child protection legislation in the world. And where there is a very simple solution that every candidate in the state election could sign up to - guarantee a home for all young people leaving care.
With only 400 or so young people leaving care each year, this is both achievable and urgent. It also makes good economic sense, because when we invest in these young people's futures we avoid the much more expensive costs in homelessness, justice and health systems that inevitably flow from long-term homelessness.
