Am I the only one who sees it?

When I watch old videos of him in his late teens and early twenties, his resemblance to many transmen I have seen is just uncanny.



If he is trans and doesn't want to come out, that is of course his prerogative.

But we often speculate on the sexual orientation of celebrities, so speculating about their sex and gender doesn't seem any worse to me (let me know if you think I'm wrong).

O.K., first admission, I'm a bit of a closet Wayne Newton fan. Danke Schoen, Old Wooden Cross. Loved 'em since I was a kid.

Now Ammi, you just might be on to something. He does look rather old lesbian, and there is definately something unusual about his voice - I've always thought he sounds very similar to KD Lang. But, would a transman have been a public figure in Wayne's day? Trans women, although known, weren't very well received by the general community back then, and I would be surprised if people even knew that trans men even existed.

Ha. I just went to Danke Schoen on You Tube and the first two comments that come up are "Jesus I thought that was sung by a woman" and "An example of "Justin Bieber" of that time period".

Maybe you're not the first one to question this Ammi.

Well he has been married twice with 2 children

but agree always thought he was trans.

I thought he was a transmen- since I was about seven.
When I saw him on the I Love Lucy Show- for the first ever time- I kept asking my mum- " why that lady was dressed like a cowboy"

lol @ him being trans. No he isn't, but I am a fan here.

He does have a womans voice.
Though Rosmary does have more range.

I'm so glad Ammonite started this thread. Cos I thought I was the only person who thought he was Trans.

I've seriously suspected it for years. Especially when he was younger.

Seems his balls have dropped by this stage.

Perhaps the most interesting part is how he has changed over time.

Comments on those videos you posted time them at 1989.

He was born in 1942.

He was 21 at the time of recording Danke Schoen (1963).

The video I posted of him singing Danke Schoen was apparently 1968 when he was 26.

As far as i know, that is just too late for the natural effects of puberty.

Which I think is evidence that he has had hormone therapy.

You'll also notice that by 1989 - when he was 47 - that his voice has not only deepened but is also having problems maintaining pitch and just doesn't have the same strength.

This is supposed to be a combination of age and 'Las Vegas Throat' (the effect of the dry air and air conditioning on performer's voices).

But I wonder if it is actually the effect of testosterone therapy.

And I think he did the hormone therapy to stop that, and while it did give him what I guess he wanted - a more masculine appearance, it also robbed him of his spectacular voice.

I was wondering if it was also possible (or more likely considering the time?) that he is Intersexed. Are there any types of intersexed sexes that were often declared male at birth, but then later go through a female type puberty?

I have found mentions of old rumours that said he was a 'hermaphrodite'.

Apparently he was outraged and threatened to beat the shit out of Johhny Carson when Johhny started making cracks about his sexuality being ambiguous (Gay).

Maybe he was so headstrong, he simply would not be detered and everyone accepted him because he would refuse to see it any other way.

He does appear to be a very head strong character, you don't survive all those years on vegas being a pussy.
