Hey guys,
Not sure if this will help but I worked with some of the Aspies during a major project at uni which dealt with Aspergers Syndrom and they were great people with honest hearts. 2 of the very sucessful individuals were Tim Ellis and Donna Williams, both diagnose with Aspergers but managed to live very sucessful lives. Tim is performs magic shows and has a beautiful (non Aspergers) wife while Donna Willams involved in art, painting, writing, song writing and music.

Fact is, you can have aspergers and still lead great lives.

Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.

Lose weight, then you might be able to fit in the mirror.

Oscar Wilde said the best thing to be done with good advice is to give it to other people.

But he was fat and is dead.

I never listen to those types
It is no measure of health- to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

That story is totally inaccurate. What they neglect to talk about is some of the background factors to the story, and the fact that mental illness can be comorbid with AS.

"Victoria’s worst killer, who deliberately lit a Black Saturday bushfire that killed 10 people, has today been sentenced to 17 years and nine months’ jail.…The judge said the task of sentencing Sokaluk was very difficult, particularly considering he has autism spectrum disorder and an intellectual disability…"

The feelings that have been described in this thread I know all to well, it has always been hard for me to socialise with people, expecially when I was younger, but now I can socialise much better, mostly with people that I know but I still feel uncomfortable speaking to strangers or large groups of unknown people. Being gay and autistic has always been difficult expecially when I had entered my teens, although things have greatly improved and I have been the happiest I have been in years, it is still hard to meet people fearing that I will say or do something that will scare them away with my differn't manner. I think it is great to see a thread that talks about being gay and being on the autistic spectrum. It is good to see that I am not the only one feeling like this.

can i ask how they diagnosed it please cheersas i feel i am too at 48 yrs of age

Hey southerner1, I can't really give you a correct answer because, as everyone (I assume that is) is different on how they are diagnosed, but for me personally I went to a psychologist who was specialized in this field, who asked me and my family all sorts of different questions, about me, and my childhood, my behavior, how I act to others, ect, then gave me all sorts of different exercises, and studied me on how I approached or responded to them ect. So yeah If you suspect that you are autistic and would like to find out, I can only suggest by my experience, is to seek a professional who is experienced in this field, good luck .

I seriously think I have aspergers and I don't say this in a light handed way.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD but I believe it is just a diagnosis of convenience a lot of times for specialists who don't have any expertise in aspergers.

I would not mind speaking with a psychologist or psychiatrist in Sydney who does understand the condition, but I am unsure who or where they may be.

Thanks for posting this Tigerland. I'm all for the change and think it will be beneficial to people on the autistic spectrum in the future.

I think you're just shirty because this thread has knocked your "Me" thing off the top perch in the Sydney forum.

I'm in 2 minds about the DSM change. The definition "Autism spectrum condition" makes sense, but need to consider the ramifications of the finer print.
