Well I have met & interviewed a gay man who was diagnosed with sex addiction.

I have been attending 12-step meetings for the past 17 years, as part of a structured programme to help me recover from my addiction. The more meetings I attend, the more support I get for my addiction, and the more ropes I will have in my hands to keep me from falling down the waterfall and losing control over myself.

My addiction is a disease. In many ways, it has been my higher power as well as my best friend. It’s what I could turn to when I feel like I can’t cope with my addiction. It also causes me a lot of pain. It’s unbearable when I see the pain it also causes for Brandon, my partner for more than 20 years, and the man I fell madly in love with when we first met. He’s a loving, caring and wonderful man, who gave me a lot of strength and support for the issues I was dealing with at that time. I knew then that I wanted to be with him, and was willing to do whatever it took to build a relationship with him. After all these years, he’s still my constant.

I find this topic interesting & fraught because it is so contextually based. What a 'married with kids in the suburbs' heterosexual may see as sexual addiction might be my best friend's big weekend.

The comments posted by Ash Rehn a year ago about our need to define 'sexual addiction' sometimes being part of the problem really resonate with me, however I can also see in the story extract published by Hitchcube today that at least for some sex addiction may be as real as addiction to a drug.

There are 2 definitions of addiction that help me understand the concept in any context most easily:

1) Use of a mood altering substance or repetition of behaviour that continues despite adverse dependency consequences, and

2) A behaviour or activity with clear adverse consequences that we feel compelled to repeat in order to feel normal.

What these definitions share is common can be pretty much whittled down to 'a repetitive behaviour with clear adverse consequences'.

If we are doing sex often, even with many partners, because we enjoy the frisson, or maybe even the risk occasionally of being observed or caught in a semi-public place, but can usually contain the activity in a way that does not usually harm ourselves or those around us, then it is probably not addictive behaviour. Slutty behaviour maybe. But not necessarily addictive.

But if we are inclined to have sex frequently - & perhaps unsafely - in a manner that affects the normal conduct of our life & our relationships, with clear consequences for either our physical or emotional health, just so we feel OK, then this probably constitutes an addictive behaviour. Or at the minimum a behaviour that most of us would prefer to change.

However I don't accept any form of addiction as an excuse for not being accountable for our actions. It might help explain why it happens, but we all have to take responsibility for the outcomes of our actions on those around us regardless of what we may consider is the root-cause (excuse the pun; I couldn't resist it) of our behaviour.
