So I just got a call from a recruitment agency about a job in Mackay... Apparently it's a very exciting opportunity... Anyway just wanted to get an idea from the interwebs on what its like being Gay in Central QLD? Is the homophobia as bad as we're led to believe?

Oh the job would be mostly office bound, but working in heavy industry...

I lived in Townsville and quite enjoyed that.. they do at least have a gay pub though....

central queensland is wonderful! apart from the heat, i miss living there terribly.

the people are overwhelmingly lovely.

and it's beautiful. driving into mackay before the sugar harvest is a bit magic

and you'll be near the reef.

Tyson to be honest, I'm bored... I'm looking to do something different, I've been thinking about moving for awhile. I love Brisbane, but I got itchy feet (must be from when I was barefoot in your car), I've not stayed this long in the one place since I left home all those years ago!

On the flipside, I only have 1 semester left of my Masters and I'd really like to finish that, which I don't think would quite work with the whole moving to Mackay thing! But I'm at least now open to the idea should something else come up... maybe I'll apply for one of those analyst jobs on a mine site in the middle of the Pilbara!

Yay come to Mackay! Its pretty good these days. Its a bit of a culture shock for people who've come from the city for the first time. Probably depends on your expectations. Options for food and entertainment are let downs comparatively. The beaches are people are mostly great. The housing market is the most expensive in qld... because there is always so much growth and expansion in the region... which isnt a bad thing. Attitudes have progressed similarly to most places. The summer humidity can be a bitch.

Tyson how do you know about the dirty nails and hairy cracks?

You may be happy to know that the Mackay Health Service District has one of the busiest colorectal surgurey departments in the state. Something to do with all those "heavy industry" blokes falling onto those phallus-shaped objects in the shower.

You'll be in safe hands there.

Yeah some asshole company flew me up to Mackay fo job inteview (before I joined the dole que) and to tell the truth I didn't like it, fuckin flat no waves , wind swept, no infastructure, ugly shit hole, no wonder people FIFO.

Buy a house, yeah right its meant to be farkin expensive because of the mines.
Rent is extreme.

Good points, local infastructure is improving and there are some contracts going atm for big work over the next few years.

Fishing is sweet and the croc are smallish.

I would not call Mackay far North.
