My girlfriend and I aren't involved in 'the scene' much either, unfortunately. I have no idea what one would do to break into it, I suppose there is always helpful sites like this, haha. So, archeology sounds cool, what year are you in now? I'm taking Psychology at Murdoch, I just finished my first Semester, so I'm pretty green, but I love it.
