Have been travelling through South America for 14 weeks and have not met 1 openly gay person, while I have been open most of the time. I guess poofters just dont like to backpack and hike/camp.

If you look at the gay room on Lonely Planet Thorntree forum (which is pretty dead) this is a constant gripe - the lack of gay backpackers. Personally I picked up on my second night in Rio at a youth hostel. I had plastered a rainbow flag to my backpack - which I would never do in Oz as I find rainbow flags tacky, but hey it pays to advertise. When you are travelling alone you have to put yourself 'out there' a bite more. But putting aside other travellers, it felt at time as if everyone in South America was gay...

Well I am about to leave South America and in 14 weeks did not encounter 1 homosexualist. Maybe I am the only gay on the continent?

Yeah, not interested in what it offers and could not be bothered in getting a visa.

Yeah Brazil enforces a reciprocal visa program - you have to pay whatever it costs a Brazilian to visit your country. For americans, that makes it 300 + dollars. I think it was about 90 for Australians. Brasil is more expensive than elsewhere on the continent but...how could you not be interested in "what it offers"? Like - incredible cities, beautiful historic towns, the Amazon, weird animals, wonderful beaches, great music, friendly people, one of the globe's most happening gay scenes....

I love, love, love Brasil.

i'm now planning my trips to Brasil to coincide with World Cup 2014 and/or Rio 2016.

if anyone should travel to S.America, Brasil should always be in the itinerary!

it's nice when you are dual citizen and can use more than 1 passport depending on which country you visit

Im mostly into hiking, camping and ancient ruins. 3 things you can not do on a large scale in Brazil. I hate the beach, Brazilian cities are very dangerous and I went to the Amazon from much cheaper Ecuador. Still I will go eventually, maybe in 5 years.

Here is what I did in Brasil (among many other things): http://ilbonito.wordpress.com/2008/1...of-the-wolves/

And Brazilian cities are no more dangerous than those in the rest of South America. But fair enough right, everyone has their own tastes...

Yes. Apparently Trafalgar tours are designed for the "older" traveller.

Hi to all. I have a little bit bad experience in one Turkish resort (Anthalia). What I can suggest you is to make a health insurance before you departure. You also have to be careful with the crowds to the main streets because it is full of gipsies (and not only) just wating you to distract for a while, so be careful with them. By other side I can also recommend you a place where was very nice, I talk about Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. The food was very delicious and more important for me was the unbelievable low price of hotel accomodations. I was in hotel Amfora (I found it here [sunnybeach-bulgaria.net/hotels/[/url]) and the price there was 12 eur/night, which included and the breakfast, so I can strongly recommend it to you.

Oooo what countries did you go to?

Last time I went over (four years ago) homosexuality has become a lot more visible, at least in the macho dominated Chile. plus i saw tonnes of queens on the macchu picchu trek thingo, and in Mendoza.

Edit: whoops, Have a great time in europe, pioneer! its probably too late but i'd suggest visiting Istanbul, apparently it is amazing, historically and culturally <3

Buenos Aires is strikingly gay too. I remember just seeing porn magazines EVERYWHERE ; in train stations, lying in gutters. Argentinians seemed obsessed with anal sex.
