Turnbull should be the leader of the opposition.

I'd vote for Turnbull. Provided the rest of their ridiculous IR policies remained rational, not one sided to business with a big "fuck you" to workers...

he comes across as arrogant but not in an obnoxious way and I dont mind him. Seems different to the current batch of troll leaders but maybe thats what happens when you become Leader. The Party is so full of trolls they make them fall in line. The whole system needs purging.

Malcolm Turnbull holds the seat of Wentworth in Sydney's eastern suburbs...
Alot of upwardly mobile gay men who live in Double Bay are his constituency - so of course he's going to support gay marriage.
Is he genuinely passionate about the gay conscience vote or not?
He was a member of Labor years ago, so perhaps he's finally showing his true colours here.
Good on him if he's genuine.

I can imagine Turnbull meeting US President Barack Obama at the White House and not embarrassing himself.
He has charisma and a certain way about him. But Mr. Turnbull being PM? What would be his other policies regarding asylum seekers, health, education and tax thresholds, etc? Would he want to privatise everything like Howard tried to?What I want to know is this - is Malcolm representing his constituency professionally or does he truly believe in gay marriage?

This shows that, at least some, people in the opposition realize their policies are decades out of date and that reform is important to the general public; not just to the lefto-pinko-commies.

Good for him. It's nice to know that there's still some actual liberal Liberals around, although they seem to be in the minority these days. The religious conservatives seem to be well and truly running the party at the moment.

Before we get all warm and squishy over mal he has not come out and said he supports gay marriage just that he wants a conscience vote ,in fact the typical lawyer/politician said nothing except he wants to hide behind a secret ballot as not to offend those for or against.

This is from his website where 2,333 respondents from his electorate were quizzed on gay marriage. More than 72 per cent of them agreed with the statement that they are “in favour of gay marriage”.

It's not just the leather jacket - although goodness knows it doesn't hurt. I respect Turnbull, and while I am never going to agree with his party on most issues, he strikes me as a man who has great intelligence that is actually applicable to the governance of Australia. He has moved his positions on a number of concerns close to my heart, issues increasingly being argued for by more Australians, and that apparent willingness to evolve and reflect shows insight, wisdom and a desire to represent in a democracy that is set up to develop, include, expand and progress. I think he's becoming a bit of a Statesman type... I hope I'm right about him. Abbott on the other hand is seriously slow.

It's a democracy he works in and for, so it would be nice if he were voting in favour of marital equity because his voters want it, but equally, it would be nice if he would vote that way because he recognises that this is a fundamental human right - the right to marry a loving, consenting partner, as set out in our UN Human Rights Charter. It would be nice too if he were ready to vote for this basic right because even though there are some 1/4 of Australians who resist the notion of equity for all, he knows that a leader must LEAD by example and he knows that if only 6% of Australians were happy with Mr. Sheen taking us to war with the USA without a second vote of agreement at UN, but most forgave him for sending us to war, then surely that 1/4 will mostly get over this too.

And to make a point: I'm not sure I believe in gay marriage - I just want the right to marry the person I fall in love with. As the t-shirt says, I didn't 'gay' eat my lunch, nor 'gay' park my car, and I don't want to 'gay' marry.

If I were in Wentworth, I would seriously consider voting for Turnbull. He has a degree of class that both Abbott and Juliar lack. He appears the way a prime minister should - at least to me. I would let Abbott be my pool boy, though.

I think he is being genuine.

He's not doing himself any favours within the Libs by being vocal about this issue.

He could've easily remained silent on this and Tony Abbott would've just copped all the blame. instead he is putting public pressure on his own leader to allow the conscience vote.

without the libs getting a conscience vote, this legislation won't pass.

Malcolm is taking the necessary steps to help make this a reality.

people should support him for it.

I believe we need to start reminding politicians that they are elected to represent the views of their constituents. As soon as they arrive in Parliament; our views are ignored and they wish to make our decisions without our input at all.
If more than 70% of Coalition voters support same sex marraige; no conscience vote is required. The voters have spoken and the Coalition should be voting for the introduction of same sex marriage. Simple as that.

the problem is that the 70% who support it will not make it a vote deciding issue, while the fundamentalists who oppose it will ..... or that is what the politicians believe. We need to replace people who will not support us 100%
Turnbull, if he can't change the party stance and vote for us, might have to go - despite his talking the talk - we can not afford to do otherwise.

If he cannot come out and publicly support and cross the floor for gay marriage Turnbull should leave politics. We do not need a self important person to be a future leader who cannot defend basic rights of individuals.
Time for change is the present day,we must rid parliament of dead weight politicians and put in more suitable candidates.
