Default Has Sydney turned into a major shithole?
Was reading this incredibly cynical blog about Sydney and it got me thinking. Ive lived here my whole life and sometimes I really hate the place. Yes it has beautiful scenery but I really cannot think of many more positives. The scenery alone is not enough to satisfy me anymore. I have seen major changes since the olympics and feel saddened by the deterioration of my home town. My experiences with the shallowness of the people in Sydney has left me feeling empty and alone. Id love to leave but where and how to go when one has not the funds.

yeah im with u enzyme, particularly in th last 7 - 10 yrs or so - since th olympics ... coincidence???

its th congestion that gets me - driving on any of th roads now its like an all day peak, and military rd, pittwater rd in summer (my area of syd) is crazy - sometimes in th past few years i have thought about wanting to go somwhere and then decided not to as i just cant cope with th traffic and id rather not go out in it, and then theres parking - or th lack of it ,and i resent having to pay upwards of $6 / hour just to park

im looking to get out atm - hoping to move to th far north coast (a number of my friends have already relocated + i have family up that way)

im originally a country boy from trangie and sometimes i even get th desire to go bac to th bush, but i kinda need to be near th coast - theres something about saltwater
what if the hokey pokey is really not what its all about

Sounds like you have a plan at least Yes the Sydney traffic and drivers are awful. I don't go anywhere in peak traffic or saturday mornings ever. Its one big carpark. Its weird that we all actually stay here and put up with all the crappy things about the place. I guess its easier than relocating but the scales are starting to tip for me. I can feel breaking point coming soon.

I dunno, it never really bothered me when I was living there.
As long as you plan your route where you're going, I never hit too much trouble. But then again, I mainly stayed in Bondi where I lived. My car was parked in the driveway, locked up behind a gate, so was always safe, and I had a carspace on Park St in the city, so never needed to worry about where to park.

The extortionate cost of everything with poor value and service, but I guess that is every major city in Australia.

Sydney takes the cake. It is definately more expensive for a professional to live here than most other cities. The only ones that would be more expensive are NYC, London, Tokyo and Vancouver.

Sure Sydney is expensive and it's hard to make genuine friends here but it's such a beautiful city. Most of us who live here have a love/hate relationship with the place. That's what is so interesting. I choose to live in Newtown and therefore pay high rent but I work in a well paying job so I don't end up a homeless person like many do who just can't survive. I love Melbourne just as much as Sydney and understand it's cheaper to live there coming from there 10 years ago. I just love my little nook I've created with my partner in amongst the hustle and bustle of the place.

You think sydney is expesive to live, try just looking for accomodation for a couple of nights . Some dowdy 3.5 star hotel chains are charging between $300 -$400 per night for a 'standard room'. Yes I know its mardi gras season and demand is high but some of them are on the verge of highway robbery.

wait a few more weeks and you should see dates on Wotif or lasminute.com.au etc

But everything today is dynamic pricing from petrol to goods to hotels to flights.

If the demand is there then you pay , if not then it drops.

For hotels it tends to drop around a month prior. Rarely months and months in advance.

Look for Citigate down in Albion St , Travelodge in Wentworth Ave is way exxy at moment, Adina on Crown or look at the motels around Randwick. No one thinks to look there yet you could walk it in 10-15mins or a quick taxi ride.

And I thought Brisbane was bad heh. I think you could easily put Brisbane as the title of that list too.

What about Melbourne? I've never been but always hear good stuff about it. My sister was there a year ago and she loved it. I'd like to take a trip down there and see whether I could live there one day.

Every time I have visited Sydney, I have always enjoyed staying for a couple of days and to do some sightseeing. But I seriously doubt that I could live there, it's a bit to crowded and hectic for my taste.

You know it's all about your perspective on whether a place is good or bad. From what I am hearing W.A. is becoming exorbiant as Sydney due to the mining boom and Melbourne has become costlier as well since I lived there.

As for Sydney, I think it's an out of date cliché that it's totally a self-centred, emotionless and superficial city. All cities around the world can be considered like that and a lot of country towns have a cliqué in the community which can fit that description as well.

I used to think you could never make meaningful friends in Sydney, yet I have been proved wrong. You can and it's all about the individuals concerned. As for friendliness, I've lived in the innercity in the thick of Gay Land for 7 years and from my perspective it's the wannabe could be's who have that attitude. I've had a lot of people from rough-sleepers to professionals be very kind to me here in Sydney.

Yes I understand what you mean. It is a love hate relationship. But sometimes the downsides outweigh the good. You really need to be in a good profession here to live any kind of good life. The average wage just doesn't cut it when paying rent and bills etc anymore. As for the people well yes generally people are friendly enough but being friendly doesn't equate to forming lasting good friendships that run deep. Personally I have none. I know plenty of people and hang out with plenty but sadly I cannot say any of them are real friends and Ive lived here my entire life.
In my teens and 20s I had some good friends because I was still hanging out with my peer group who I grew up with but one thing led to another and we all went our separate ways. Trying to make new friends has been an ongoing challenge ever since. I just don't seem to meet very genuine people at all. Also I am of the view that if people don't make the effort then neither do I. I really don't like always being the one to instigate things. Not that I haven't tried. I have invited people to do things and then never heard back from them so I don't bother again. Most of the time I just think if they can't make time for me then I can't make time for them.

Interesting article here about the decline of Sydney. It takes a much broader, historical view.

A city is where your heart is. It's what you make of it, how you see it, how you are.
Cynacism closes many doors.
Pessimism seals them shut.
Open your heart, open your mind....
....Australia in general is very Sydney-centric.....alot of people, diverse, multicultural, urban sprawl....
....depends on who you talk to....I have a fondness for Sydney but the drive-bys seem out of control and Oxford Street seems to have lost its' identity - from what I've read.....if you're a club person, cafe person, cinema person, stay at home person....depends where you go, too....

I was born and raised in the country so I know how boring it can get.

I can still have time alone living in the City if I want it . But I like the option of bars/restaurants all around me. Big name shows constantly coming to Sydney.

I like living on the lower north shore. It has a holiday feel to it especially down at Balmoral but also love how in Summer time the Harbour always has something happening and there is a real buzz.

When I do go home to visit I enjoy the relative peace and quiet of the countryside but after about 3-4 days I cant wait to get back to the buzz.

Some are born for the countryside lifestyle and others for the Big City.

All of the worthless disease ridden homeless and houso trash need to be forcibly removed from the city - preferably under military escort. I am sick to death of disgusting old men pissing and shitting their pants at Broadway Shopping Centre and houso trash that have been given the great privilege of living in the city for virtually nothing.

The city should be solely reserved for the professional class.

AH.... the City of 2 Laned TOLLWAYS / TUNNELS and a few Freeways......... with the most expensive tunnel / toll in Australia .........I'd hate to live in the North West and drive on the M-Queue each day.

..........where roads aren't planned, just badly built, with zero consideration for any merging (gotta love the mergers south along near the the Airport runway tunnel and South Dowling Street f**kup !!!!

What else = those annoying 40km zones in 70kms zones - just because we badly planned and put a school on a main road (added that sckool kids can't learrrn how to xross da road properly !!)

Where local councils think that they should be worrying about other countries and nuclear materials transported thru their streets... hole ridded 3rd world streets that they are !

Where bikes are the preferred option for a Lord Mayor that prefers who chauffer driven car to the office.... only to whine about cars in George Street and the monorail.

Where the word Meriton means 4th world housing ! (or student ghettos)

Where the Bermuda Triangle DOES exist - it's at Homebush !!! (M-Poor and badly planned roads / intersections)

Sydney = where getting around is an exercise in pointlessness.

Sydney is one of the best place that everyone love to visit becasue of the scenery that they offered. It also help in achieving certain views to make tourist still to visit.
