Default New Brisbane LGBT Comic Readers Group
"LGBT Comic Readers Group"

Hey Guys, how is everyone doing? Happy Easter to you, too! I wanted to let everyone know that a new queer readers club may be starting in the following months. This club will be for anyone and everyone who loves comic books and graphic novels! The club would meet monthly, and would be a spinoff of Brisbane's Queer Readers.

An information and discussion night is being hosted later this month on the 26th of April, 7pm to 8:30pm at Healthy Communities if you'd like to come along and listen. Feel free to bring your ideas on the night for the group, and any aims that you might like to see incorporated.

Contact Curt on phoenixmen28@yahoo.com.au or Jan at Healthy Communities on 3017 1777 for more information.

Date: Thursday, 26th of April
Time: 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Location: Healthy Communities, 30 Helen Street, Newstead (available by public transport to the Teneriffe Bus and Ferry terminal)

"Have you read a brilliantly written and drawn comic book lately that you think might be of interest for discussion with others? Why not join other comic book readers/fans in discussion over a cup of tea or coffee?"

I attended my first Comic Readers meeting last month and was excited for the future of this group.

There was a presentation by Rob from Queer Readers, also a librarian for the BCC library system. There was some really interesting parallels drawn between the world of superheroes, double identities and gay life.

I have been into comics and graphic novels since I was a teenager, they've always been there for me as a form of escapism I suppose. I started with Popeye and Archie, moved on to the Marvel Universe with the Xmen, Avengers, Thor, Ghost Rider and slowly grew into the more autobiographical graphic novels that tend to engage me on a very personal, human level. I have never really connected with other gay men in general-interest-social-group type situations, so this was great. Being able to seriously discuss comics with my fellow mutants - sorry, comic lovers - made it very easy to be a part of.

From this meeting I already have some great titles to check out and have been assured of the BCC libraries commitment to building a solid collection of comics and graphic novels that in the future, may enable this group to create a reading list of top shelf titles.

Hey Guys,
Since the April introduction meeting there has been one more, the June 28th meeting. There will be another one on July 26th at Healthy Communities. If people would like more information, they can contact Curt on phoenixmen28@yahoo.com.au or Jan at Healthy Communities.

The presentation at the last meeting was pretty dynamic and very informative. The presenter was actually Rob and he gave some good advise to the group in supporting its development. We are hoping to put together a book list which hopefully both Queer Readers and the Public Library System will be able to distribute. If anyone has a few recommended titles, please let me know. Thanks. :-)

I like what was just written about the last meeting. Thanks to eco for his entry. Like himself, I started out with Archie being my comic of choice but gradually moved into DC and Marvel Comics. I tend to be more of a Marvel fan myself and especially love the X-men (hense my profile pic).

Ok, if people would like to join the monthly meeting email reminder list, please let me know. There is also a facebook page that is currently a work in progress but people can certainly leave announcements. The address is http: //www.facebook.com/LGBTComicGroup.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and feel free to send me a message at phoenixmen28@yahoo.com.au, as I am not on same same as often these days but hope to change that in due course.

Look forward to hearing from you and perhaps meeting some of you at a future meeting, as it would be nice to correspond and interact with other comic fans.

Cheers,
Curt

Hi Tolerance, thanks for the supportive message. If you'd like to join us in conversation one month, please feel free to come along. Happy to chat outside the group too, as it's rare to meet and greet other comic fans. Hope you are well. Cheers, curt

Thanks greggles for your message. Yes, we have had a good turn out at the first and second meetings. We hope you can attend a future meeting. We meet the 4th Thursday of each month, next meeting is July 26th.

Hope you are having a good weekend thus far. The star observer, queer radio and same same did an announcement about the group, so hopefully the word will build with time. cheers, curt

Might have to check this out at some point. Haven't read comics for a long, long time, but the recent Spiderman movie has convinced me I need to.

Might see ya in the future!
