Anyway it annoys me when gay men state publicly that they are sexually attracted to young teen male celebrities as it paints a picture that we gay people are pedophiles. You only have to read the sexually perverted comments online that gay men are making towards the young boys in the band "one direction" (as an example) to know that's it's giving us a bad reputation.

Ephebophiles actually, straight men are no different.

So what if he is gay and publicly closeted? It's not really anyone's business but his. Magda Szubanski was publicly closeted and when she came out she was the darling of the gay community.

Why do I get the feeling that if Ian Thrope came out (if he is gay) that all we'd get is a bunch of "told you so!" and more BS directed towards him?

Has anyone here ever been told "You're not really gay"? How did that feel? That's a two way street.
Has anyone here ever denied being gay before or after coming out of hte closet? You had your reasons right? It was your own business right?

Maybe he's gay, maybe he's not. Maybe he's out privately and maybe he's not.

It seems to be the tabloids who are obsessed with sexuality rather than LGBT folk. I don't care what Ian Thorpe's sexuality is as he has said he is straight, yet if he were gay, I would care. It would be awesome: an out gay role model in swimming. But he's not. It's not like I want to or am going to sleep with him anyway. Are those who are asking him his sexuality all the time gay men? I profoundly doubt it.

I'm sorry but I don't care if Ian is Gay, Straight, Bi or into goats. Can he swim? Great. Does he do his job well? Wonderful. That is literally the only thing I need to know about him and the only thing anyone not related to him deserve to know. And no he's not sending any bad messages, it's actually a good one. His life, his business. If he breaks any laws or hurts someone, then we can start to talk about his personal life, until then not our concern

It must be soooooo annoying, he has to take the dick out of his mouth to answer. Come on, does anyone really believe that he's not gay?. He's just digging himself deeper into his hole of lies. I don't see why Ian should be hounded about his heterosexuality.
He comes across as an insightful, sensitive guy.
If a celebrity who happens to be gay doesn't want to come out publically that's their business. Yeah, it's important to look up to confident young 'role models' and visibility in the media helps with appreciation and acceptance but being out and being safely 'out' are two different things. If Ian was gay and he's not out of the closet that would be an issue for his conscience and sense of identity.
If a person doesn't want to be a role model they shouldn't have to be. Everyone has to live their own lives. In an ideal world every gay person on the planet wouldn't be too worried about coming out but life isn't Leave It To Beaver.

It's not enough to be proud to be gay. Being gay is not an accomplishment.

People who are 'out' should be proud for having the courage to say 'I'm gay and I don't care who knows it'. That's what pride means to me.

To be gay is merely a state of being. Nobody is special for being gay. It's how you express your gay pride that makes a person 'special'. Am I making sense?
