it's remarkably similar to the 'queer eye for the straight guy' phenomenon, where gay guys were allowed to redecorate your house, so long as they were clean, attractive and they didn't get too "real".

it reminds me of that margaret cho skit where she says, "if you're against gay marriage yet you laugh your ass off to will and grace, fuck you! because you can't just pick and choose what you like from our culture and then leave behind the burden of inequality!"

One thing that really irks me is how much more faux lesbianism would be accepted than faux gay men. I was trying to think of the closest comparison recently, and the video clip for This Boy's In Love by The Presets is *kinda* homoerotic and the brainstrust that is YouTube commenters spam about how much they hate the clip.

It just comes down to that sad straight guy fantasy of two girls.

i think that if you have the voice you obviously use it. music is the biggest tool for promoting , flaunting, exaggerating, twisting the truth and promoting lies., we need more real people in the music industry that are going to sing what is real. sound people today worship these people, if they say jump they do!!! it's a dangerous line all people really want is to connect with the song and they subconsciously use the words in that song to get them through their life. no matter at what stage they are in it.

I've got mixed feelings. It's important to be accepted but I also value to unique underground culture of the scene. Lesbians have always been cool!

While these shows come a long way to portray the GLBT community as an accepted part of society, they only reinforce the accepted stereotypes that mainstream audiences are familiar and comfortable with – the camp gay male and the butch lesbian . Any representation of a gay person outside of the accepted stereotype is rarely, if ever seen on mainstream television. As a result, the GLBT community is not represented as an accepted facet of multicultural society on television, but as an oddity to the dominant heterosexual ideological lifestyle perpetuated by mainstream television.

AND while i'm on my rant, can I also say Rove MacManus is just as bad! He can not air an episode of his variety show without making reference to a gay joke, reinforcing how out of touch mainstream television is with the GLBT community. Aside from his usual “who would you turn gay for” question to guest stars, sketches such as the “21% of people tried turning gay during earth hour” and songs from his sidekick Ryan Shelton singing “I’m gay” while dressed in a lycra body suit only trivialise the discrimination faced by the GLBT community and suggest to mainstream audiences that it is ok to make fun of homosexuality. While this type of humour may appear to be harmless fun, it only serves to provide more ammunition to those who wish to vilify the community. Consider how funny it would be if the joke was reworded to say “21% of people tried turning Jewish/black/aboriginal during earth hour”.
