Move lots of straight people to San Francisco and upset the gay ecological balance they have there.

Funny to read a report like this from another country and yet here in our own backyard there seems to be concern that our community is breaking down, venues closing and we still don't have the rights we deserve. When you look around though at other countries we do have it pretty good and there is no denying things are moving even if its slow.

I think both major political parties are in favor of law reform.

Venues are closing, but also opening.

We're doing alright!

It's a very very long list, but we might want to start with ....
Law reform, removal of all areas of discrimination against glbt people in all aspects of our lives ...Reform of drinking/food/venue laws to allow for alcohol

The strength of the community would have got us to 2nd... certainly not our Federal Government that considers us 2nd class citizens, this needs to change for us to be at the top of the list

I've been to every city on that list except Copenhagen and I'm surprised London isn't on top? It certainly has the most diverse gay scene. San Fran is more inclusive than Sydney.

oxford street is dead... it really is. there are a few signs of life there tucked away, but it's pretty much over and the sooner we accept that and move on the better.

i think melbourne should be in that list too... it's far better for gays these days than sydney.

i think sydney coasts along on what it used to be. most people that i know who have visited sydney in recent years have told me how disappointed they've been.

Totally agree, I have lived in London for the last month and the gay community is more visible and so much more diverse, it's not just on one street, it's the WHOLE of the city.
I do love my Sydney but I'm afraid when it comes to a gay lifestyle, London is kicking it!

Walking around in the dark empty streets between Peel and Laird is hardly a scene.

Prahran is a bit busier but has exactly the same chaotic drug-related stuff that exists in sydney or any other big city.

If anywhere in Australia is listed second in the world, then there's nothing for me to look forward to then! I think NY has a great gay vibe in Chelsea area. There's about four other cities on that list that I think are so much better!

Cleaning up Oxford Street and bringing back its glory days when it was feelgood and unique would have to be top of the list, oh, besides civil unions that is

I'm surprised Sydney got 2nd. I visited London in December would have thought it would have been higher up the list. Maybe it's because there are so many homophobic Jamaicans there who want to kill "baty boys"? Whatever the case, Soho is Darlinghurst on steroids.. It's fabulous! I guess they're judging it on more than just the number of gay bars and taking into account the overall lifestyle, which if you have enough money to enjoy it, then Sydney does win hands down (beaches, etc).

New York is good too, but the gay scene does have a darker feel there, probably because of the amount of drug use. I was shocked to see 2 people dropping in a short period of time at the Roxy, while the people around them generally kept dancing. Sad.

I'm surprised Cairns didn't make the list. (joke)

Depends where you live in Sydney.
Darlinghurst, yes. Bankstown, no.
Surry Hills, yes. Mt. Druitt, no.

It depends what area, you must have only been around Templehof which is the dominant lesbian area. Berlin is a gayer city than a lesbian one.

Pretty mindless article. I think they really just trotted out the "usual suspects". There wasnt much real thought or research put into it. For example, if you were going to pick one Spanish city, Madrid has a waaaaay better gay scene than Barcelona. And where is Sao Paulo? They have arguably the hottest gay club in the world ("The Week") and a gay pride party that last year drew the quivalent to the TOTAL POPULATION of Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane combined!
