Default The awesome dodgy restaurant guide - brisbane
so im stealing this idea from the Sydney forums!

Brisbane has some great little places that only a select few know about.. the ones with the horrible decor but awesome and cheap food!

My personal favorite is in Chinatown mall..

Tiny little Vietnamese/Chinese place next to Chinahouse restaurant .. think its called Kim Pho Lam..

BEST Vietnamese food your going to get in Brisbane and dead cheap too..

have an awesome pork vermicelli salad!

Also Valley Bakery has really really great Vietnamese Pork salad rolls for like 3.50$..

anyone else?

Well...while not Brissy...in Southport across from the mall, there is a Japanese ramen place (next to big chief burgers) called Ichi-ban Boshi...FANTASTIC food...

karaage chicken....omg (almost drowns in a pool of saliva)

Can't wait to move back up there!!!!

When I lived in Brisbane, the bf introduced me to a place in West End on the corner of Boundary Road and some other road whose name I can't remember. It's near the bar where they have the doll's-head chandelier, whose name I also can't remember - it's been four years.

The place is called Cafe Meze, it does tradition greek and is hands-down the best greek restaurant I've ever been to - and I now live in Melbourne, so that's a pretty big endorsement. It's best to order off the tapas menu - whole grilled calamari, Greek sausage, Greek beans, Greek meatballs, gilled halloumi, their dips platter with pita bread, their whole grilled field mushrooms and their souvlaki.... You. Died. Gone. Heaven.

It's dirt cheap too. If you haven't been there you really have to try it. It has the most wonderfully distasteful a-la-greco paint job too, complete with fake columns.

(Welcome back WT)

three wise monkeys is not bad.. wasn't blown away last time i went..

there used to be this vegetarian restaruant over in Carindale that was AMAZING... super cheap food and very tasty..

unfortunately Joyce ( who ran it ) started selling curry puffs and pumpkin puffs at the markets up here and it really took off.. you can find someone selling her food at almost EVERY market in brisbane at the moment.. so the restaurant became obsolete and they closed it down..

Wok on inn on Brunswick st in newfarm is also awesome..

waaaaaayy better than any of those chain noodle bars, the serves are MASSIVE and very very yum..

rather than a set menu you pick noodles, sauce and then whats in it..

massive plate of noodles ( or bowl of soup, the laksa is pretty good ) is around 13$

Try the Korean place on Brunswick Street - name not remembered, but it's upstairs (between the two malls) and the decor is very Uni Refec! But, brilliantly tasty Korean food and wonderful staff. And open LATE! So late that it when it is open today it is still open tomorrow.

Pandemonium on Given Terrace, Paddington is funky, fun and food-filling! Just not open all the time, which is a shame.

Moving away from the "cheap" side, must give the biggest wrap to "Pearl Cafe" Logan Road, 'Gabba. With the reported demise of Moray Cafe, this is the one we need to support - it's gay owned and run and is pure bliss - breakfast, mid morning, lunch, mid arvo and I believe some dinners too. Food is all organic and full on taste and style but not prissy pretenious.

Then there is "Codpiece" - my current favourite restaurant (and the likely venue if I take anyone out for dinner these days). Such a kewl place, such great food, such wonderful staff. Cnr Kent and Brunswick Streets.

Oh, just had a thought....the Greek place on Boundary St, West End. the one with the tables outside just up from Suncorp. They are great too!!! Speaking of West End, there is also another kewl, funky cheap as place up the road from them and on the other side. Can't remember their name either! General coffee shop and easy meals place. Has booth style seating too! Reminds me of a place in Williamstown, Melbourne. Gay staff there too (West End, not W'town.)

And finally, ice cream - Schlicks, Brunswick St opp the Press Club....yeeee hah!

And finally, finally - best risotto in Brisbane, Castelli's Rosalie (Nash St). Before Codpiece opened, that was the restaurant that I would take people out to dinner.

Ah...memory lane - anyone remember "Puzzles" cafe on Given Terrace, Paddington? That was the original great late night eatery that was chic without being naff, funky without being too kewl for skewl. Nothing much like it in the area now...the naffn.ess of Coffee Club has overpowered anything else. But, should be nice about CC....seeing as it is run by a....whoops....can't say that in an open forum.

There's a great little cafe-restaurant in Camp Hill - not really cheap by any measure - called Rapede. Seriously, as far as affordable fine dining goes this place is second to none. I always make sure I visit whenever I'm in town visiting the family. The staff are wonderful, the food is sublime and (this is the best bit) they'll stay open for as long as your group want to stay and hit the piss, which is rare nowadays.

Ummm....you sure you even went to the right restaurant?

I've been twice and have nothing but the highest praise. The quality of the food, the AMOUNT of food, the friendliness and expertise of the staff (and yes, they were girls too, so I'm not being my usual distracted self).
