Default Sydney & Melbourne in World Top 25 Fashionable List

LOL ...& a high-techish way of compiling the list. Don't really know the ramifications of such a list and the validity of its source. Interesting nevertheless.

New York tops list of world's fashion cities
Wed Jul 18, 2007 2:54 PM IST

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - New York was on Wednesday named as the world's top fashion city for the fourth consecutive year, according to a survey by a U.S.-based language use group.

The Global Language Monitor, a non-profit group that tracks words and phrases in the media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere, compiles an annual list of the top fashion cities.

New York ousted Paris as the leader in the list four years ago, leaving the French capital jostling with London, Rome, and Milan for the other top positions in the list.

This year, Rome beat out the others for second place with Paris coming in third position, followed by Milan and London. Hong Kong was rated the top fashion city in South Asia, coming in 8th position overall.

Other notable rankings included Shanghai at number 14, Sydney and Melbourne at numbers 12 and 15 respectively, and the fashion quartet of South America -- Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Buenos Aires.

Krakow, one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland, made it to No. 25, apparently because of its emerging status as a centre of neo-Bohemian influence.

"The ranking is surprising in a number of ways, most of which relate to the changing nature of the global fashion industry," Millie Payack, a director of the Global Language Monitor, said in a statement.

"Cities that recently would have been considered fashion backwaters - or worse - are now emerging as significant regional hubs."

Following is the list of the top 25 fashion cities:

01 New York
02 Rome
03 Paris
04 London
05 Milan
06 Tokyo
07 Los Angeles
08 Hong Kong
09 Las Vegas
10 Singapore
11 Berlin
12 Sydney
13 Barcelona
14 Shanghai
15 Melbourne
16 Moscow
17 Bangkok
18 Mumbai
19 Santiago
20 Rio de Janeiro
21 Sao Paulo
22 Buenos Aires
23 Johannesburg
24 Dubai
25 Krakow

That's kinda cool for Syd and Melbs. I wonder what exactly they use to measure it? How many times it is mentioned in the media?

(PS love your avatar savoy!)

Thanks Tim.

Yes, it seems some kind of monitoring system that is used to guage just how fashionable a city is (whatever that is LOL). I have no idea of the mechanics of it but if the surveyors take the whole shmmmozle seriously, one would hope they are surveying correctly. For example (possibly a really obvious one), if the word "Sydney" is guaged in its context throughout the source, that it should be surrounded by choice words that would make it OK. The reasonof course being that that particular article or series of articles may be saying Sydney is outsville this coming season thus making any positive findings redundant.

I figure Syd & Mel get a boost on the list due to fasion weeks. The top 6 cities look quite @ home in their positions.

I think Melbourne should be above Sydney in the list.. there's more quirky, unique Fashion in Melbourne in comparison to Sydney. Sydneysiders, IMO, are predominantly brand whores...

Generally for sure robbie. Any Aussie would know Melbourne is considered theee so-called "Fashion Capital of Australia", no doubts about it...

...but read how this particular survey got its findings in the first post. Even that is not really clear.

Take it with a grain of salt. Slow news day.

Sydney has far more Convenience stores, Aldi supermarkets, and Lowe's menswear emporiums. Melbourne just can't compete.

Runny noses and icicle earrings are not fashionable, thus Stockholm was forcefully removed from the list.
