Default The bloody L word
Ok. For a long while now ive heard of this mystical show called the l word. I'd only seen 1/2 of an episode before and found no real interest in it. I watched the pilot episode yesterday and wasnt completely excited by that either.

I dont get it. And I dont wanna look like or f*ck shane like so many girls do...

Whats so good about it? The fact that 1/4 of it is mild sex scenes? Bah i dont get it.

Ive been told that i am not a real lesbian unless i like the L word. What kind of freakin generalization is that? Its the same as being told that im not a real lesbian if i dont like Ani DiFranco either. Bah i dont like either.

Am I a failed attempt at a lesbian???

I think that if you love sex with women, rather than with men, and you have a girlfriend, and you are only attracted to women you just might be a lesbian.. call me old fashioned, but i thought thats what it was about.. although, i think before you get the degree you have to have a lesbian type haircut, at least once,

ani sux, but the lword is good..get ur ass to season 4 and 5.

i dont many girls/ladies in real life that like shane..its just on the show - but i think shane is hot, dont care that she's a badass...and i know plenty of 'shanes' in real life and they're entertaining parts of the 'scene' just like anyone else. the lword uses as many stereotypes and over characterizations as any other tv show..when it was first on alot of lesbians didnt like it cos they felt it didnt accurately potray them..i embraced it straight away cos i recognise that tv is my fantasy land and i dont necessarily want or expect to see everyone represented exactly as they are in life.

girlsongirls - you dont have to like anything, diversity is the 90s buzz word that i will always cling to and you should always always be proud of being different

ok back in my box. lol

forgive the rant and typos, im barely here tonight but still felt the need to post

I think your looking at the show way too deeply GoG. I cant say that ive meet anyone like anybody on the L word.

The char are different and nothing like us, your right about that.....It is set in west hollywood and not here,if we had an aussie version im sure that the char would be completly different. American audiences must see some similarities with the char's and themselves, otherwise it would be pointless. Most tv shows have char that we can identify with in one way or another, but based on us not being in america we cant draw similarities to shane....Carmen ect........ yes it has great sex scenes but so does the guys version " Queer as folk" ( which i must say im watching too...hahahahha)

I think its personally like any other TV show.....its something to watch and entertain...nothing more.....

ive learnt not to take notice of freaks who generalise in the past couple of days otherwise id believe that i cant wax my garden i must leave that hairy...cause we all do that dont we....oh...and a friend asked me did i like anchovies....i said eww no...she said i must since im a lesbian!!!!!!!! so i must like em huh......the world is full of idiots and we have soooo little time to educate them all....

In the end...we are all different its what makes us individuals isnt it? If we were all into the same shit the world would be rather boring wouldnt it? You are most definatly not a failed attempt at a lesbian...Just an individual.....like me.....and its the different people like us make the make the world a more colourful place....

I like both the L Word and Queer as Folk mainly because as a lesbian we are not represented on mainstream media. I might not be as buff rich and beautiful as the stars on these progarms but I can dream...

May be I just older and can remember when we were killed off on all the soapies. It's great to still be around for more than a few episodes

ur right GoG - it's shit.

I found myself being entertained in the past by Queer As Folk. Now that I'm getting older, and I don't just see it as softcore porn to watch on SBS while my parents were asleep, and can actually see how frightfully shameful the acting is, I've come to the conclusion that they're both just really really bad shows. In my opinion, the only reason they made it so big was because they were edgy several years ago, and possibly might still be seen as being so, because they showed what appeared to be an uncensored blunt view of the homosexual world. But now being a little older and wiser, while I'll always have a soft spot for QAF because it was something i kinda came of age to/with, but essentially the over-characterisations and the skill of the actors (akin to that of Neighbours) are something I don't seem to have time for anymore.

yes yes i remember that - always the psycho lesbian characters! oh, remember butterfly kiss? i remember my friends being upset that it was yet another crazy lesbian love story but i just thought it was intense and strangely beautiful..guess im twisted, not that there's anything wrong with that.

mmm. Never been into the L word. I like it when the theme is integrated seamlessly into shows and "just is", ie: no fireworks, no "Oh My God" scenes, it's just normal - for example, Willow and Tara in Buffy, 6 Feet Under, Bert and Ernie in Sesame Street....

My world doesn't revolve around my sexuality, it's a great part of me but that isn't all that defines me. Besides, I'm more for a good plot in a show than a gimmick.

I realise this makes me a minority.
If there's one thing you can't lose, it's that feel.

I watched a few episodes and I don't think its really that good either... (:

I think it's just really popular in the lesbian community because its about lesbians... Apart from that its just an average romance/drama series which has way too many sex scenes for no good reason. lol

You're not alone gOg. I'll be honest and say that I only watch it for the sex scenes, not the story I also like the fact that it is a show with mainly women and GLBTI characters. It's enjoyable to switch my brain off, not have to think and watch feminine women getting their freak on with each other.

And to be even more honest, I'd be just as happy and content watching women kiss and be affectionate and loving with one another, rather than the full on shagging in the L word.

Don't worry, I am not into Shane either, but this is one of my favourite TV shows. I enjoy it because it gives an insight into what life is like for lesbians. Their lives are just the same as hetersexuals - they break up, they cheat, they struggle to start a family, etc.

Plus, the woman are kinda hot, so that's a bonus!

I like the show, once you get into it then it's pretty good. If you only saw the pilot then maybe you won't like it that much, the pilot mostly revolves around Jenny if I remember rightly. It gets much better in the later seasons if you ever decide to give it another chance.

oh my god. i think you just described my life. i used to watch Queer as Folk on SBS after my parents were asleep and see a little of myself in the characters. this was before i realized my sexuality.
yes, it was mostly just porn but i think it was less the sex and the acting that the plot lines. there were great plots.

the l word i must admit as crap was the acting and as cheesy the plot i liked it. maybe because it was different that mainstream.

i think it was big because it was blunt, edgy and well to quite a description i read somewhere 'it shows the good and bad of the male gay community'. it showed love without being cheesy. big selling point for me.

i have to agree with your sentiment of coming to age with it.

LOL sorry but this post is so funny!! "Don't shout at me" roflol.

Rain we have profiles on here, if someone clicks your name they can see a little bit of info about you, and can send you private messages, or public ones called "shouts." If your profile is set to private, nobody can send you messages or add you as a friend. That's what Velvety was trying to say.

Personally i do enjoy watching the L Word.
I loved watching queer as folk. But just because someone doesn't watch it doesn't mean they are not gay etc.
I think what attracts so many lesbians to these show is because every other show one tele these days lacks homosexual relationships. Yes yes some do touch on the subject but the next week they are straight again and the whole gay thing was just a mistake.
I don't find shane attractive, i am more of a Bette fan. I think because i am more attracted to older, wiser women......

Lol! hope rain got the shout box figured out
I think we all are unique in our own way ,what turns one on may not be the same for another!

I hate typecasts but i guess we need a way to know whos who whats what?
I also feel no matter what sex,race,religion....,
We are all the same and should respect and accept all.

I beleive attraction is not just physical.
i also look at a persons behavior and way they treat others,

i am so sorry for not knowing that. i think i can change my profile from private, i didn't realize restrictive. i think i will reply to both your posts from here. easier. i didn't realize about the writing in pink. i am sort of new with all of this stuff. i would love to have a private conversation, it would be interesting i am sure.

i am going to change my profile so that is possible anyway. just so you know. now i am going to shut up because i am burning with embarrassment.

i really enjoy the l word, but it does have faults- as do all shows. it's really hard to compare life on the l word to life here- because of the social status, the location, the salaries, a lot of things. but it still amuses me, and i enjoy it most of the time.

i found betty pretty nasty though...

shane? i find shane awesome =). so do my other friends who've watched it. i'm not really out there in any lesbian scene or circles, so i know noone like her, or any of the other characters.
