hey everyone..

im running a fundraiser later in the year featuring 4 bands and dj's, and to raise money for the open doors foundation that helps disadvantaged youth. Its going to be an under age event and i have just found a venue to run it in, now all i need is a name.

I run a fundraiser each year with the same basic premise, called Holes And Poles..

I need a new name to run this underage event under.. any ideas?

something strong, something cool...

if someone comes up with a winning suggestion they can have free entry to Holes And Poles ( if they can get to brisbane in june ) and a Dizzygotheca CD..

What sort of event is it? What type of music do these bands play? What type of crowd (other than underage) are you trying to appeal to? What's the venue like? Indoors? Outdoors?

ok, its live music, all queer bands, fairly alternative and a few dj's..

there will be an electronica band, a rock/dance band, an all female rock band and one more

it will be a mixed queer crowd, so straight, gay,lesbian, bi, transgendered.

the venue is the queensland QAHC council building, which is i guess like the sydney aids council, gives out safe sex info and looks after the community. its in a very cool open area with a stage at one end, concrete walls around and sky above, there is also a catwalk down one side.

the event kind of came around because of the stats of queer queensland youth self harm and suicide..

"of the 164 young people surveyed from across QLD, 37% of them had
attempted suicide within the last 12 months, 82% had considered
suicide in the past 12 months and 59% had harmed themselves."

its to raise awareness of these stats, provide a safe and positive place for queer youth, and also to raise funds for open doors.

But yeah, probably a bit 'rude' for the underage hey

I think it's brilliant you are doing this! Underage guys I talk to are always complaining they have to wait until they are 18, and now there are those rumours going around about making it 21. Like hell that'll happen!

I'm guessing you want 'something strong' because of the types of bands/DJ's playing there, not something like Sydney's 'Twinktown' or something, right? Prob not 'Donuts & Cherrios' either

I'm gunna have to get back to ya on this one.

just another thought re naming: have u thought bout contacting open doors and getting some of th young ppl there to come up with th name - that might promote a bit of ownership to th event amongst th young ppl themselves

same deal for th young person who come sup with th name - free entry and th CD

The disadvantaged kids your helping probably already feel 'bent' enough in life as it is. Should they be reminded of this? Try to steer away from labels that reinforce difference, damage or oddity...just my suggestion.

...but Peter is right on track - get the kids to name it themselves....

How have you gone about identifying which kids are eligible for fundraising revenues? How have you determined which kids are at risk of suicide? Have they already vocalized these thoughts? Are they from poor socio-economic areas? Are they clients of refuges? Are they wards of the state?

Just to protect yourself, may I suggest you convene a fund allocation committee? A community forum on how the monies will be distributed? I only say this because someone will put their hand up & ask you these questions. Best to be prepared. Good work, though. Great stuff. If you document this as much as possible you can take your findings to the relevant governing body for a grant next year or something...

Queensland would have a Minister for Youth Affairs?
Get them involved, somehow?
Talk it up as much as possible.
Take it from grass-roots to full sponsorship.

yeah thought of this, unfortunately to be included in the Pride Festival, which this will be run as an event under, i need a name to be included in the media which is getting printed very soon.

I originally wanted to have a small team of kids who would learn how to set up an event, and will still work towards getting this happening. While im not an exhaustive resource on running events, i do believe i could work with a team in a 'mentoring' aspect..

unfortunately the groups i have approached up here have not been able to help me set this up .. still trying but time is moving on..

all money raised after covering costs is going to Open Doors, the youth organisation. All events i run are documented and all receipts kept.

All research i have quoted was from the Galaxy report that was run last year, if you check out the open doors website or PFLAG wesbsite you will find the report.

From what I gather Open Doors is about helping young people (and their friends and family) learn about and accept their sexuality by offering counselling and support.

So, having a name that is a bit 'gay' may well be a way of boosting confidences etc.
