I want a new national anthem.

Who the hell uses the word 'girt' in a sentence?
Seriously.
I know the word means 'surrounded' but NOBODY uses it the real world.
Is 'girt' even in the dictionary?

'Oh, today I accidently stepped in a puddle & my foot was girt by the mud'.

'The NZ group sex victim was girt by horny, muscly footballers'

it's distinctive
people know more of the words
it doesn't have the word girt in it

and mainly because the melody is actually very beautiful and i have an emotional reaction to it. i don't get that with advance australia fair.

I want it to be changed to 'We are Australian' No offence Ammonite but I dont think Waltzing Matilda holds much relevence today whereas this one shows our history, unites us and sparks that same emotional reaction.

Its not official enough, and how about changing the flag first and getting rid of the royals

i reckon it is so moving - the dual maori/english combination - but im especially moved by th maori part

dunno if australia could ever be that progressive

Personally, I havent got a problem with The Anthem or The Flag.

what about the great song that goes;
"I like to have a beer with kevin, I like to have a beer with kev, we drink at the Town and Country, where the atmosphere is great,I'd like to have a beer with kevin, 'cos kevin's my mate"
etc.

It encompasses everything the Aussie likes to do...almost. And the words are simple.

Nothing wrong with girt, it's a National Anthem not some song you belt out at karaoke. The only line I have a problem with is "In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair" and the bloody pomp they put at the start before the first verse. It should just end at the AAF after let every stage. It's short and I relate to every line in it. The 'We are Australian' song makes us sing things that we are not and things that I would never want to be. Waltzing Matilda is terrible and was soundly trounced back in 1984 when it was also put up to be the ANA. I love the flag as well and it should not be changed even if we do become a republic.

Most national anthems are pretty boring I don't think ours is that bad it could be worse we could be singing "O Canada..."
