You've got male! Grindr gets anew look

All-male mobile hook-up app Grindr has today rolled out its first major revamp in several years, promising a “rebuilt app, completely redesigned for iOS7.”

The change is happening today for many Apple iPhone users, and similar updates to the Grindr apps for Android and BlackBerry users are on their way soon.

“We’ve totally rebuilt the program technology to make Grindr’s back-end stronger, faster and smoother (or hairier). Just how you like it,” says the popular app’s crew.

Users who update the app will see substantial changes right away, with much larger profile picture thumbnails and a new logo – still a black skull shape on a distinctive orange background, but without those creepy old ‘teeth’.

There’s also a useful ‘chat inbox’ which allows the user to see all your previous messages at a glance, an oft-requested and long-overdue feature.

The controversial idea of ‘Grindr tribes’ was flagged last year and is evident in the new version today. Users can now categorise themselves into up to three ‘tribes’, including: Bears, Jocks, Daddies, Geeks, Otters, Twinks, Trans, Clean-cut, Rugged, Poz, Discreet or Leather.

“Join the group that is for you,” the app now invites its users, but you don’t have to nominate one of these if you don’t want to.

The idea of fitting into specific groups – or not – may turn some users off the app altogether, but the new function addresses some leakage of users over to other similar apps which aim to serve particular subsets of men seeking men, like Scruff for bears, Recon for fetish-oriented folks, and many more which have sprung up in recent months.

The cities of Sydney and Melbourne are among the world’s most popular centres for Grindr users. Watch Aussie guys speak about their Grindr experiences here.

It's not paid advertorial, no. I always take a bit of heat whenever there's an article here about Grindr, but a lot of people use and like the app so I think this long-awaited update's newsworthy. xx

Never used Grindr, never will. A mate of mine has it and after seeing all the riff raff that's on there it makes the Men of Gaydar and Gay.com etc look like Royalty!

Ive started to become increasingly tired of Grindr. Sure, there were times when the app itself seldom worked properly, but these days its more about the men who are on there. If they aren't interested, many either just block you, or simply dont respond to your messages at all.

Surely it's not that hard just to display a little manners and respect, and simply say "Thank you for your message, but you arent the type of guy Im looking for." Im big enough and old enough to take a rejection, if its done the right way. :)

I'm gonna buck the trend, and not add to the chorus of complaints, by saying that I like Grindr, and their new upgrade

In fact I went on a lovely date with a cute guy last night, that I started chatting to on Grindr on Wednesday. Met up with him after he finished work at 6pm last night, and we went strolling and chatting around circular quay, the domain, and the rocks. Then we went for a few drinks at a pub in the rocks.

Why are you surprised Wyso?
Take me for example. I am not on any of these apps but if gave it go wouldn't you think that i am decent guy?
Hope you got my point.

I get your point, I know some guys who are on these apps who only look for friends. :)

It's just that,
LW on a date = does not compute
:p

Let's just be honest about realities of modern life. People are more financially well off than ever before on a personal front it is a completely different story. Many are unhappy , lonely and depressed. They would do ANYTHING to find that someone special.
While personally i am skeptical about these apps. it doesn't mean that there are no decent guys out there with right motives.

Nope. Horses for course. You don't just have a one-size-fits-all approach. Depends on how much you like the guy and how well you click with them
