This couple will divorce ifmarriage equality happens

Nick and Sarah Jensen are convinced that marriage must be kept simply between a man and a woman – and they say they want nothing to do with the institution if same-sex couples are allowed to marry.

In one of the most unusual statements yet against marriage equality, Lachlan Macquarie Internship director Nick Jensen has told Canberra’s City News that he loves and wants to stay committed to his wife Sarah, but the couple are heading to the divorce court if same-sex marriage happens.

“When you change the meaning of marriage, it becomes meaningless,” Jensen says. “My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same sex couples.

“Our view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation,” he adds. “Part of God’s intimate story for human history. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And the marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognises God’s involvement or authority in it.”

Jensen is also currently the outspoken Australian Christian Lobby’s Director of Leadership Development.

He says he realises his decision to divorce on principal “is not one that many will readily understand” but assures concerned people “our decision is not as extreme as it may seem. We will still benefit from the same tax and legal provisions of the state’s “de facto” laws.”

They’ll also continue to be married according to the church and to their understanding of God, but their union will not be defined by the state, explains Jensen.

“This is what we have to do as Christians who believe in a Biblical definition of marriage, that we can’t see that definition change in a way that no longer reflects God’s truth.”

Jensen’s announcement is a real shame as it forces his own marriage into a debate which shouldn’t actually be affected whether the law changes or not. Bizarre statements like Jensen’s can also work to demonise all religious people as conservative cranks, whereas an increasing number of churches and people of faith in Australia welcome LGBTI people into their congregations and support marriage equality.

You can read Nick Jensen’s complete statement about his potential divorce here on the City News’ website.

So to protest against marriage becoming, in their words, meaningless, they will get divorced? Isn't that just like protesting against deforestation by cutting down a tree?

Nutjobs.

They're the same as those heterosexuals who won't get married until marriage equality has been achieved. A purely pointless protest.

Oh just grow up you losers. I have been married to the same woman for 25 years and if you think that anyone else's relationship affects how I feel about her or my four children, then you don't deserve the right to call yourselves human. Your biblical interpretation of marriage is as much a joke as the fact that you would even admit to this publicly. Get a life!

So going by their logic of "if the gays do it then we won't do it anymore", does that mean they will no longer work, drive, vote, drink, travel and do almost everything else that gay people are legally allowed to do???

Please explain to me how same sex couple who LOVE each other getting married and having the same BASIC HUMAN LEGAL RIGHTS as heterosexuals is affecting YOUR marriage????
Go for it you bigoted twats prove just how easily YOU will mock the "sanctity of marriage" you are so he'll bent on "protecting" but wut wait.... With all your christian beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woma and its Gods will and all that garbage what about the whole DIVORCE is frowned upon in the christian church unless a partner is unfaithful or the divergences are irreconcilable..... Pretty sure a country changing its marriage laws to include ALL of its citizens regardless of sexual preference is neither unfaithful or irreconcilable diference..... Please correct me if I'm wrong

In a departure from the moderated language from other government leaders, Social Services Minister Scott Morrison is concerned that marriage equality may "tear the country apart".

So, pop quizz: Which nations have been destroyed by allowing LGBTI citizens to celebrate their relationships equally?

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Greenland, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, England and Wales, Scotland, (36 states in the) United States and Uruguay

Allowing same-sex marriage does not change the meaning of marriage... Marriage is a union of two people in love who want to solidify their engagement, and bond themselves through a ceremony. At least that is what it means to those who love each other.

I would encourage this couple to go ahead and get divorce because it does not prove a point. Honestly... All I can respond with, other than what I've written here, is: "Face-palm"

Same-sex marriage does not affect the quality of life of Nick and Sarah James - nor does the concept of it impact upon their petty little-minded thought process.

Nick and Sarah want, and have experienced, their fifteen minutes of fame. Let's say goodbye to Nick and Sarah James.

Because not only shouldn't they be married with an attitude like that .............

But more importantly they shouldn't be allowed to breed .... either together or with another spouse.

There are enough foolish, ignorant bigots out there without these two adding to the gene pool. ;)

The fact that they are willing to divorce proves that they don't care about marriage, they just hate gay people.

State marriage is a civil institution created by man. It is separate from how that couple's medieval cult defines marriage, so it shouldn't concern them.

Nick Jensen claims marriage is timeless and organic but if this is so why is there so much polygamy in the old testament of the Bible? The fact is the early Christians and the Jews around the time of Jesus adopted the idea of monogamous marriage from the heathen, godless, homosexually permissive ancient Romans. Would seem a few history lessons wouldn't go astray here. It all comes down to education in the end. In any case, the Jensens are clearly placing themselves at the risk of hell. Jesus was very straightforward concerning what he thought about divorce, although he didn't have anything to say about homosexuality.

Gotta love so-called christian hypocrites who hide behind their religion to justify their homophobic views.

If they believed so much in marriage they would have lobbied the government a long time ago to ban heterosexual defacto couples and divorces!

Some people can look at it objectively:

Time for government to exit marriage business

It would be too easy to dismiss the Jensens as oddly obsessed with other people's relationships, but they may have unwittingly uncovered a flaw in Australia's political system ("Christian couple vow to divorce if same-sex marriage is legalised", smh.com.au, June 11).

If we're serious about the separation of church and state, then why is a distinctly religious definition of marriage the one that's enshrined in law? Shouldn't the government get out of the marriage business entirely, and allow absolute religious freedom around whatever partnership ceremonies people may wish to perform with each other in places of worship?

Governments could simply issue domestic partnership certificates, or similar, which would cover all the (real and important) legal issues, to any two people who were prepared to shoulder the legal burden. Couples such as the Jensens could choose a purely "sacred" union, without invoking government sanction at all, while leaving others the option to define for themselves what sacred means, and also add in the legal protections of a domestic partnership should they so choose.

Everyone wins. And no one has to feel, for bigoted reasons or any other, like they are losing anything because of other people's choices.
