Emmy Awards to RuPaul:You’re a winner, baby

RuPaul Charles won his first Emmy Award at the Sunday night ceremony, sashaying away with the gold statue after only being nominated for the first time this year.

The Drag Race star won the Emmy Award for outstanding host of a reality or reality competition series. RuPaul’s Drag Race has been running for eight seasons, in addition to two seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars.

Backstage, RuPaul told journalists, ”iI’s a very special night not just for me but for all the young people around the world who dance to the beat of a different drummer.”

The singer, performer, author, and empire builder beat out fellow nominees Ryan Seacrest ( American Idol ), Tom Bergeron ( Dancing With the Stars ), Jane Lynch ( Hollywood Game Night ), Steve Harvey ( Little Big Shots ) Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn ( Project Runway ).

In a Variety interview earlier this year, RuPaul remarked on why he thought it was he and his show had never been nominated, claiming that drag “will never be mainstream. It’s the antithesis of mainstream. And listen, what you’re witnessing with drag is the most mainstream it will get. But it will never be mainstream, because it is completely opposed to fitting in…

“I part of the mainstream? No. People know my name, people know what I look like, but am I invited to the party? No, and there’s a reason for it.”

After winning, the statuesque star was a little less verbose on Twitter, and his Drag Race co-star Michelle Visage also joined in the celebrations.
