'Clicktivism' won't save SafeSchools. But here's what will.

Last week a petition calling for the Safe Schools program to be pulled from all NSW schools was debated in NSW Parliament.

It had been signed by 17,000 people – which is significant number considering that all petitions coming through parliament have to be signatures on paper copies. Internet petitions don’t count. It’s suspected that their petition was distributed through a number of large Christian churches, as it was worded to accuse Safe Schools of discriminating against people who view male-female relationships as “normative”.

Basically, it was blatantly homophobic.

Now, the office of NSW Greens spokesperson on Sexuality and Gender Identity, Jenny Leong, has started a counter petition, in collaboration with the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby and Community Action Against Homophobia. They need to get at least 10,000 signatures on paper before they can take it to parliament, but it would make for a powerful statement if they were able to get more than the 17,000 on the anti-Safe Schools petition.

It’s absolutely vital that we prove an overwhelming community support for the program.

“We know that school can be a tough time for young people, it’s a time when they are working out who they are and where they fit in the world. It’s hard to believe that anyone wouldn’t want students to feel safe and supported at school during this time in their lives,” Leong tells SameSame.

“Research shows that many young people who are victims of transphobic or homophobic abuse or bullying will attempt self-harm – and that’s a tragedy,” she continues.

“We should be doing all that we can to support young people at risk, as well as ensuring our schools are free from discrimination and harassment.”

“We know that there is broad community support for Safe Schools, from parents, from teachers, from members of the LGBTIQ community, they know firsthand the detrimental impact that experiencing homophobia or transphobia can have. But most importantly there is a demand from students who are in school right now. They want their places of learning to be safe and inclusive so they can achieve their best.”

So, what can we do to help?

Firstly, you can take the time to print and sign the petition here, before returning it to Jenny Leong’s office via post. You can also read more on Leong’s passionate support of the Safe Schools program here.

Same Same will be meeting with Leong later this week to discuss the different ways we can help moving forward, and plan on holding a weekly stall in Newtown to gather petition signatures. We’ll share further information on Facebook once details have been confirmed.

It goes without saying that the Safe Schools program will be of enormous benefit to future generations of young people. Personally, I look back on my schooling experience and am overcome by awful memories of being tormented and verbally/physically abused from as young as five-years old. However, I’m also overcome by a determination to prevent my future children suffering under the same ignorance.

Education is the answer. Safe Schools is the answer.

Let’s come together and save it.

The 17,000 petition against Safe Schools by the Chinese Community makes no sense. Safe schools program NSW is not mandatory & requires Parental consent. If you don't want your Chinese children in the program, do absolutely nothing then make sure you don't sign the consent form but then sign a 17,000 petition to scrap a program your children were never going to attend?......and if the rest of NSW wants the program you can all get stuffed.

Safe Schools is ran by a bunch of loons. How can one go and preach tolerance yet attend a rally and physically attempt to rip a Trump supporter cap off.

Lead by example or bugger off!

The reason Roz Ward was attacked by News Limited in regards to the Safe Schools program is because she is a Lesbian, the heterosexuals behind Safe Schools never get a mention - but we always only hear about Roz Ward, and she is only ONE person. Surely you can see though the News Limited BULLSHIT - your not really that blindly dumb are you?

No it's because Roz Ward is a far left radical who is pushing an identity politic agenda. She's no different than Pauline Hanson in her absurdity.

Now here's what's going to save Safe Schools. The Victorian Government has put the Victorian education department in charge of delivering the program from 2017.

It's a good decision by the Andrews Government.

@cost_boy_21... Lets play the lesbian card. Pathetic!

Safe schools would be supported if it was ran by a group of non radicals with common sense.

So the news limited story was staged -- must be fake news? The fact is her behaviour was disgusting for physically attacking someone because she disagreed with them... that is not tolerance it is bullying and bigotry.

The last thing we need representing our community are hypocrites. You either believe in tolerance and respect for all regardless of religious, race, sexual preference, political views or not. It really is that simple!
