Community Upset At Midsumma'sNews Corp Sponsorship

Midsumma Festival’s 2017 Pride March is facing community backlash after it’s come to light that News Corp Australia is one of the festival’s major sponsors. Tensions reached boiling point after News Corp’s Daily Telegraph published an anti-Safe Schools opinion piece by Labor’s Greg Donnelly on the same day they broke the news of 13-year-old Tyrone Unsworth’s death.

Aleph Melbourne, an organisation offering support to LGBTI members of Melbourne’s Jewish community, lead the protest yesterday, pulling out of the march after participating each year since 1997.

“While News Corp journalists like Andrew Bolt, Miranda Devine and Rita Panahi are on a crusade to destroy transgender kids, the Safe Schools program and marriage equality, it is completely unacceptable for any LGBTIQ community organisation to accept money or in-kind support from them,” said Aleph’s co-convenor Michael Barnett.

“Thirteen-year old Tyrone Unsworth might not have had cause to take his own life if News Corp had not fuelled the fires of bigotry and intolerance.”

“Aleph Melbourne calls on Midsumma to hold News Corp to account for their words and actions, along with returning any cash sponsorship or in-kind support,” Barnett said.

Veteran LGBTI journalist Doug Pollard wrote in his blog The Stirrer that: “Midsumma have made a very serious error accepting sponsorship from News Corp. If they keep News Corp it, whether it’s in cash or kind, they are complicit in the campaign against Safe Schools and marriage equality.”

“Worse, they are complicit in generating fear, anxiety, depression and yes, even suicide, in the LGBTI community.”

Midsumma festival took to social media yesterday in response to growing community concern around the financial partnership, pointing out that this will be the second year News Corp have supported the festival.

No wonder so many GLBTI people refuse to be part of the community with all this hatred and nonsense from left wing activists.

As for bigotry it is not Malcolm Turnbull, the coalition or news corp to blame it is the bigots from the left (Greens, ALP and lobby groups) who dictated their stance on pushing marriage equality backwards.

As for safe schools I guess it is okay for members to physically attack opponents at a rallies as one does not need to practice what they preach.

If people are so annoyed with News Corp financial support put your money where your mouth is... That's right the left only like receiving hand outs and complaining.

News limited is scum, who attack us LGBTI people at any opportunity possible. Sure they reported on the suicide of the 13 year old boy in Brisbane, but at the same time on their website they featured a story about "lesbian vampire killers" I'm extremely disappointed that the Midsummer festival is associating with bigoted News limited.

Midsumma forgot the LGBTIQ community a long time ago. Its more an arts festival now.

Putting aside for now your rigid ideological blindness and obsession anything non-Randian is a socialist plague the acceptance of Murdoch's tainted sponsorship is more an indication of what the Mardi Gras -sorry - Midsumma ( I hate that stupid name!) has become, not so much a symptom of selling itself short.
You need also to face the fact not even mindless, violent anarchist groups see themselves as being on the left. They're more likely to identify with Atilla the Hun. Seriously, you should attain worthwhile employment as a Liberal Party speech writer/spin doctor if you haven't already.

Dame Iris Murdoch herself informed her offspring he was overseing a media sewer rather than a news corporation.

With logic like that they should be pulling out of Judaism as well.

As a person who went to the very first Midsumma, how many people on here actually were present on that day and what was it like ?

Small scale compared to the Sydney Mardi Gras and like early Sydney parades far more political than today's sequinned events.

My first (and last) street party was in 2002. I think that ended up being the last one ever? Public liability etc got in the way and that was that. :(

One guy also wanted to like the first post, belonging to sugarwalls, but refrained because he didn't want "that nasty lot having access to my email address".:rolleyes:

Nasty because their gay or nasty because they publish unsubstantiated BS?

As we can see from this Same Same can gain mainstream attention but when you have the library of articles from Sam Leighton-Dore it will never be taken seriously. SS needs a more robust publishing standard.

Agreed. A couple of recent articles have been barely hearsay-based.
