Why Mark And Faye Leveson AreMarching In Mardi Gras

Parents Mark and Faye Leveson wouldn’t miss Mardi Gras for the world – rain, hail or shine.

Tonight, the loving couple will be marching with the Parents and Friends of Lesbian And Gays (PFLAG) float for the seventh time since their son, Matthew Leveson, was killed. While the event is something the pair now look forward to, it wasn’t always easy.

“It took me a while to get strong enough to march,” Faye tells me over the phone. “I couldn’t face it at first, because Matty really loved Mardi Gras.”

“I’ve always thought LGBTIQ people are beautiful, and Mardi Gras reinforces what a wonderful community it is,” she says.

The parade is also an opportunity for the couple to express their pride at being parents to a gay son, with Faye saying she struggles to understand parents who are unsupportive of their LGBTIQ+ children.

“There are so many haters out there and we don’t understand why, especially parents. We’ve lost our son, we’d do anything to have him back.

“They don’t know what they’re missing out on, it breaks our heart.”

The inquest into Matthew’s death was originally set to resume on Monday March 6th, but has recently been changed to a directions only hearing, with Leveson’s ex-partner Michael Atkins not expected to be present.

I hoped they had a good night last Saturday night in the parade. How bittersweet Mardi Gras must be for them.

I hope their prayers to recover the remains of their beloved son, is answered soon.

And hopefully, one day, the perpetrator is brought to justice.

I think Mark and Faye are genuine people. With everything they've gone through they just have so much heart.
