The drag king Queen of Scots

In the mid-1500’s, the tall and charismatic Mary Queen of Scots enjoyed disguising herself as a man and venturing out beyond her palace gates at night to drink in pubs.

These and more tales handed down about Mary led Aussie-born author Jesse Blackadder (pictured) to question what might have gone on between the Scottish monarch and her loyal and obedient lady-in-waiting.

“An epic historic thriller with a lesbian cross-dressing subplot” is how publishers Fourth Estate describe Blackadder’s new novel The Raven’s Heart, which the author says was in part inspired by the success of lesbian writer Sarah Walters’ critically-acclaimed all-girl bodice-rippers.

“There’s no suggestion in contemporary or current history that the Queen was a lesbian,” Blackadder told LOTL magazine, “but I couldn’t help being fascinated by this extraordinary character. Mary was the most famous cross dresser of the time – but surely not the only one.”

The critics are raving. “Erotic and sexy, dark and eerie, adventurous and playful, The Raven’s Heart is a delicious read,” says ABC Radio Short Story Award Winner Hayley Katzen.

Jesse Blackadder’s The Raven’s Heart is just landed in good bookshops across Australia.

I loved this - I love the subversive edge of imAgining the queen as a possible lesbian, and Alison Blakadder, the crossdressing lead character, is hot! When's the movie?
