Review: Lady GaGa's Born ThisWay

GaGa’s album has leaked. We didn’t download it, but we heard it somewhere…

I must admit, over the last six months, I have fallen out of love with Lady GaGa quite a bit. The build up to Born This Way has been so long and calculated and drawn out, it’s all gotten a bit boring. Now that the album is finally here, I feel it must be measured along with the hype that has gone along with the release. Remember, GaGa herself has called Born This Way “the album of a generation” and “the greatest album of the decade”. Let’s go track by track and see, shall we?

Marry The Night is a really nice way to open the album, with a great vocal over a synth church organ, which kicks in pretty hard for the chorus. The song does go on a little too long, but the hook is so infectious, it can be forgiven. A great start to the album. 7/10

And then that terrible “It doesn’t matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M” line comes in to take the wind out of the momentum that Marry The Night generated. Born This Way is fundamentally what I find wrong with Lady GaGa at the moment: over produced and condescendingly preachy. I get she loves every different fan of hers, and I honestly think she does, but the song just comes off like a cacophony of random sounds thrown over the top of the original backing track for Express Yourself. Completely misses the mark, and a terrible choice for first single, regardless of its success, which I am still baffled by. 3/10

Government Hooker is all kinds of sex, but not at all sexy. It’s sleazy and hard, but devoid of emotional connection and conviction, and I assume this is because GaGa is playing off the dichotomies that the song is about. The production is reminiscent of a much harder hitting version of Holly Valance’s State of Mind. The song is good, not commercial at all, but it works. Such a shame about the dire line “Put your hands on me John F Kennedy”. 7/10

In the scheme of the record, Judas still comes off a right mess. The same over-production that plagues Born This Way rears its head here. If anything the slick minimalism of Government Hooker that proceeds it makes Judas seem even more all over the place. Completely out of place on the album, but it has grown on me a little since its release. 4/10

Americano, a major highlight on the album, and the first song that screams GAGA, is what you’d expect GaGa to sound like backed by a demented mariachi band. Mixing Spanish, English, the occasional sound of someone pumping a shotgun and a narrative about immigration that isn’t completely overpowering, the song works on all levels. It’s hard. It’s biting. It’ll make you dance and the coda is lush. 10/10

Once you get past the cringy first verse in Hair the song is pretty good. The build is nice, the chorus in engaging and the song makes you want to dance, but as a metaphor for identity, Hair doesn’t exactly work coming from a woman who wears wigs all the time. Indie.Arie’s I Am Not My Hair has a much better message. The sexy saxophone on the track helps, but it does sound that instead of singing in her upper register, GaGa’s vocals have been pitched up in places. 7/10

Scheiße = Berlin Sex club in the 90’s, and it’s pretty damn great. The build unfortunately does sound like it has been lifted directly from Justify My Love, but the chorus is so damn huge it’s completely forgiven. Again, the track isn’t commercial in the slightest, and would never be a single, but the song is an anthem if I’ve ever heard one. Perfect vocal. Perfect production. 10/10

Bloody Mary is beautifully subdued, while being very grandiose in scale at the same time. GaGa’s vocal delivery is fantastic, with nice subtle touches of production affectation. The arrangement is beautifully gothic but for some reason whenever the song goes into the chorus, I can’t help but sing Human League’s Don’t You Want Me. The song gets bonus points for the choir singing “GaaaaaaaaaGaaaaaaaaa” in the background. 9/10

Bad Kids is total 80’s glitzy kitsch with absolutely fantastic verses, and a less than fantastic chorus that is just too high and squeaky. I completely get what she was trying to do with the song, but the chorus completely kills the energy that the verses ride. 6/10

Highway Unicorn (Road to Love) is all kinds of suck. Ten points for getting ‘unicorn’ into a song title, but no. Verses sound like noise, chorus does nothing for me. Skip. 2/10

Heavy Metal Lover continues the raw industrial sound of Government Hooker and Scheiße but with heavy vocal processing reminiscent of something you would expect Bloodshy & Avant or William Orbit to do. Contrary to the song title, there is no signs of heavy metal here. Again, would never be played on radio, but it’s all kinds of slinky sexy. 10/10

Electric Chapel feels like filler to me. Some of it works, some doesn’t. It’s the most organic sounding track on the album, but something about it is just really flat. There’s no energy to it at all and is just very sleepy. Arrangement and production is nice, though. 5/10

Yoü and I has been a highlight of GaGa’s live sets for the last year, and unfortunately it has been completely destroyed by the production on the album. It’s just so busy and overcooked (clap drum loop? REALLY?!), the great melody of the song has been completely destroyed. It’s as if GaGa is scared to sing a song with just a piano on a record. It’s always the highlight of her shows, why can’t we just have a song recorded that way? 6/10

The Edge of Glory is clearly a very personal song for GaGa, having written it for her deceased grandfather, and it is easily the most genuine and emotionally connected GaGa appears on the album. Total highlight and very much deserving of its promotion from promo single to fully fledged release. 9/10

Born This Way is not “the album of a generation” and it’s not even close. That’s not to say that it is a bad album by any means, because it isn’t, it’s just not mindblowingly amazing like The Fame Monster was.

There are some really amazing high points like Americano, Scheiße, Bloody Mary and Heavy Metal Lover, but many of the other tracks just feel bogged down by overcooked production or trite lyrics.

Again, it’s not a bad album, and it’s easily one of the better pop releases of the year, it just doesn’t even come close to the hype that preceded it. A solid 8/10 release.

I was curious about what makes a 10/10 track

Downloaded the leaked album

And..... well.... "Americano" isn't half as pop as Just Dance or Alejandro or Bad Romance. I wouldn't say those tracks were 10/10 either, but they are fun pop songs.

It's like when a columnist in SX News was gushing over Judas.

That was the most banal track I had ever heard (to be given an expensive filmclip) and he was giving it coverage as if it justified his existence and getting angry with anyone who denied Gaga.

Americano doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. Government Hooker and ShiBe are fine.

Log onto news.com.au, smh.com.au or read one of their newspapers and you will find frequent stories about her or similar in there, sometimes even on the front few pages ahead of real news. Like the music industry, the film industry, television, radio, etc, there is lack of innovation across the board. Proper journalism has been replaced with cheap tabloid style journalism on a global scale.

How many years in a row has GaGa appeared on this list?

And comparing her to Lennon is weird.

She is influencing a certain type of person. And even then she is doing it in a way that makes them an easy sale, by pandering to sexuality and "I am bullied an misunderstood" hype.... Lennon did not pander to an easy to sell to demographic. He just didn't.

ok after listening to the album I must agree it certainly isn't the album of the decade although this decade has produced very little outstanding albums compared to decades past in my opinion.

Americano is brilliant love it

I love judas now and in fact is up there for me.

edge of glory is still my fav and the best song on the album.

born this way is still a great first single with a powerful message despite what some are saying on here although I agree that the production is a little off on it.

schibe is heaps slick and makes you want to dance like a model lol.

heavy mental lover is good.

hair is good.

electric chapel is good.

so far none of the others have left a lasting memory on me as I can't remember them yet.

overall a good album but certainly not an album that you just have to listen to from beginning to end on repeat.

It's an awesome album. You're review has 8 songs you marked above 7. That's more than a lot of albums can credit. People that aren't gonna like it are Madonna fans because they can't let go of the fact that someone else is taking her place. Seriously I'm not a Gaga fan, I'm a Jazz and funk man but it is an awesome album and (her self promotion aside) deserves credit. Not to dispel Madonna's talent but she's 50. Let go! If people would stop comparing stuff to her and just enjoy what's being played we'd be much happier. Edge of Glory is awesome plus when you buy the album there's 3 extra tracks. 17 songs in total so even if you only like half you still will like more songs on this album than most albums in your collection.
