St. Petersburg LGBT activistssay 'We Will Not Be Silenced'

Last week, two activists were arrested in St. Petersburg for protesting the city’s new law banning ‘gay propaganda’. In retaliation, a group of fellow activists are speaking out in a new viral video.

One of those arrested was a straight attorney named Sergey Kondrashov, who was rushed to jail for displaying a banner that read: “A dear family friend is a lesbian. My wife and I love and respect her, her way of life is as normal as ours, and her family is as equal as ours too,” reports Towleroad.

Despite international uproar, conservative lawmakers in Saint Petersburg have passed their notorious “propaganda” law to silence any reading, writing, speech or debate on anything “gay” – and the governor signed it in to law.

International LGBTI activism group AllOut is currently working on a solidarity campaign. Join them to make a stand here.

While it’s hard not to get caught up in battling for own equal rights in Australia, we must not forget that in other countries, some of our own brothers and sisters face even harsher persecutions for simply being themselves.
