WATCH: Man-love on Game ofThrones

A critically-acclaimed TV adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s medieval fantasy novels features a same-sex relationship among the violent familial power struggles.

Described as ‘The Sopranos in Middle-Earth’, Game of Thrones is now in its second season, with a third entering production. Created by HBO, it’s broadcast locally on the pay TV Showcase channel just days after episodes air in the US.

In the scene below from the third episode of season two, Loras (Finn Jones) and Renly (Gethin Anthony) share an intimate scene, showing in no uncertain terms what fans of the books may have suspected about the pair’s relationship.

The writer says he aimed to handle Loras and Renly’s relationship with subtlety. “I couldn’t ever actually say, ‘such-and-such is gay,’ because, as I’m sure you know, the word wasn’t invented until the ‘60s,” Martin notes. “And I’m talking medieval times… But I thought it [their sexual relationship] was pretty clear in context.”
